points where someone could have told the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He absorbed that.<\/p>\n<p>Dennis could have told me about Calvin.<\/p>\n<p>Tyler could have told me about gambling.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe could have told Tyler about Nolan.<\/p>\n<p>Diane could have exposed Samuel sooner.<\/p>\n<p>Warner could have published the contamination records.<\/p>\n<p>Vale could have confessed in frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe doesn\u2019t remember the name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy unusable?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProfile note said: WON\u2019T LIE FOR FAMILY.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ray looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSounds like you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They had profiled me as controllable through responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>Tyler?<\/p>\n<p>Clearly not.<\/p>\n<p>Dennis?<\/p>\n<p>Had lied repeatedly.<\/p>\n<p>Then I understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother never met Calvin?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I tried to remember.<\/p>\n<p>She had died twelve years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Sharp.<\/p>\n<p>Private.<\/p>\n<p>Unimpressed by money.<\/p>\n<p>The woman who told me love does not erase consequences.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe she had seen more than I knew.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cName?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret Briggs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel searched.<\/p>\n<p>Then inhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer profile?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe reported Rourke Development to a federal hotline fourteen years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>My mother knew.<\/p>\n<p>Before Dennis confessed.<\/p>\n<p>Before I understood any of it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she report?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuspected coercion related to your Hale property purchase.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew Dennis was involved?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t she tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer report says: My daughter won\u2019t leave her husband if I accuse him without proof.
