Dennis didn\u2019t give Hazel the ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sam:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Woman:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I searched her office last month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>Last month.<\/p>\n<p>Before Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>Before the storm.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had already entered my business.<\/p>\n<p>Someone who knew enough to search.<\/p>\n<p>The woman continued:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPayroll archive wasn\u2019t touched.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My breath stopped.<\/p>\n<p>The ledger had been hidden inside that archive.<\/p>\n<p>She had been close.<\/p>\n<p>Sam asked:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou tell Calvin?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her reply came quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I need the ledger before he gets it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The audio ended.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>This woman was not simply helping Calvin.<\/p>\n<p>She had her own objective.<\/p>\n<p>Tyler said, \u201cRebecca.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s the only woman we know in the network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ray pointed at the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan Daniel compare voices?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are,\u201d Daniel said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot long.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone buzzed ten minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVoice comparison is strong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRebecca?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A name I did not expect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiane Price.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel\u2019s wife is dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ray straightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe died four years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel spoke carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe checked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiane Price is alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room seemed to tilt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel reported her death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI attended the memorial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was no body present.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was cremated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is what everyone was told.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered the memorial.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Flowers.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel crying.<\/p>\n<p>No funeral home viewing because Diane had supposedly requested privacy.<\/p>\n<p>No one questioned it.<\/p>\n<p>Why would we?<\/p>\n<p>Daniel continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer legal death record appears fraudulent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is she?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy fake her death?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLikely to disappear from Calvin\u2019s network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why was she in my house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know that she physically entered.
