attack you.”

Patricia nodded once.

“And Eleanor was there instead.”

“Yes.”

The room seemed to tilt.

Dad’s violence had not been spontaneous.

It had been planned as a method of control.

And he assaulted the wrong woman.

That did not make anything better.

It made it worse.

“What did Vale do afterward?”

“Changed the plan.”

“What plan?”

“To keep all of us trapped.”

Patricia wiped her face.

“He used Richard’s crime against Richard.”

Martin leaned forward.

“How?”

“Vale told Richard that if he ever turned on the financial arrangement, Eleanor would go to police.”

I understood.

Blackmail.

Vale had leverage over Dad.

Patricia had leverage over Vale.

Thomas had records.

Grandpa had suspicions.

Everyone controlled everyone.

The theft network survived because exposing one crime exposed another.

That was the architecture.

Not merely shell companies.

Mutual destruction.

“What was Eleanor’s pregnancy?” I asked.

Patricia looked at me.

“The strongest leverage of all.”

I felt sick.

“Because I might be Richard’s child.”

“Yes.”

“Vale wanted me hidden.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because if paternity became public, Eleanor’s accusation became harder to bury.”

“So you all participated in falsifying my birth records.”

“Yes.”

“Mom too?”

“No.”

“Grandpa?”

“Eventually.”

“Richard?”

“Yes.”

“Vale?”

“He arranged most of it.”

A system.

That was what Thomas meant.

Dad was dangerous.

But Vale built a structure where everyone’s worst secret protected everyone else.

Even after Vale died, the structure survived.

I looked at Martin.

“Who controls it now?”

He looked at Patricia.

She shook her head.

“I don’t.”

“Thomas?”

“No.”

“Dad?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Before she could answer, an investigator entered quickly.

“We found Thomas.”

Daniel stood.

“Where?”

“About six miles from here.”

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Condition?”

“Uninjured.”

Daniel exhaled.

Then the investigator continued.

“He wasn’t alone.”

My pulse jumped.

“Who was with him?”

She looked at me.

“A woman matching Eleanor Shaw’s description.”

I stood.

“You found my mother?”

“Yes.”

“Are they coming here?”

The investigator hesitated.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Thomas says Eleanor went with him voluntarily.”

“That doesn’t matter.”

“There’s more.”

“What?”

She looked down at her notes.

“Thomas says Eleanor asked him to take her to the one person who still has the complete Harrington records.”

I felt cold.

“Who?”

The investigator met my eyes.

“Margaret Harrington.”

Vanessa frowned.

“Margaret is dead.”

The investigator shook her head.

“Not your mother.”

Then I understood.

Grandma.

The woman who supposedly died in that car crash twelve years ago.

“No.”

The investigator’s expression did not change.

“Thomas says your grandmother survived the
