becoming.”

“Yes.”

“So you disappeared again.”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“I won’t tell you.”

“Why?”

“Because I survived by making sure Richard never knew everything.”

I wanted to argue.

But for the first time, I understood.

That strategy had probably kept her alive.

“Why come back now?”

Silence.

“Eleanor.”

“Because Richard started asking questions about the locker.”

I looked at locker 317.

“How did he learn about it?”

“I don’t know.”

“Peter?”

“No.”

“Daniel?”

“No.”

“Martin?”

He shook his head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

“That is what frightens me.”

She paused.

“Someone who knew your grandfather’s investigation still exists.”

The investigator leaned closer.

“Can you identify anyone with that knowledge?”

“I can identify three people who knew part of it.”

“Who?”

“Martin.”

He nodded.

“Leonard Vale.”

Dead.

“And one other.”

The investigator waited.

“Who?”

Eleanor’s voice dropped.

“Patricia Mercer.”

Daniel’s mother.

My aunt.

We all turned toward Daniel.

His face went pale.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

“What did she know?”

“That her father had hidden records.”

Daniel shook his head.

“She never told me.”

“That doesn’t mean she didn’t know.”

My mind raced back to dinner.

Aunt Patricia had been present.

She had watched Dad push me the bill.

She had said almost nothing.

“Where is Patricia now?”

Daniel looked around.

She had left the restaurant before we went to the hospital.

“I assumed she went home.”

The investigator took out her phone.

Daniel called.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

He swore.

“Where does she live?”

He gave the address.

The investigator dispatched officers.

Eleanor suddenly spoke.

“Claire.”

“Yes?”

“If Patricia is gone, don’t assume Richard took her.”

The warning chilled me.

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying your aunt kept secrets from both brothers.”

“Both?”

A pause.

Then I understood.

“Dad had a brother?”

Nobody answered.

Martin looked stunned.

Daniel stared at the phone.

Vanessa whispered, “Dad is an only son.”

Eleanor said, “That is what Richard wanted everyone to believe.”

I stood again.

“Who is the other brother?”

“His name is Thomas.”

“Thomas Harrington?”

“Yes.”

“Where is he?”

“I don’t know.”

“When did you last see him?”

“The day before you were born.”

The investigator leaned in.

“Why has nobody mentioned him?”

Eleanor answered slowly.

“Because Thomas disappeared the same week you were born.”

My hands went cold.

“Did Dad have something to do with it?”

“I don’t know.”

“Was Thomas involved with you?”

Silence.

Then Eleanor whispered, “Yes.”

Martin looked at her phone as if it had betrayed him.

I understood before anyone said it.

Martin had not been the second man.

Thomas had.

“Was Thomas the other possible father?”

“Yes.”

I stared at the laboratory report.

Martin excluded.

Richard overwhelmingly probable.

“But Grandpa’s test says Richard.”

“I know.”

“Then why does Thomas matter?”

“Because Richard did not know the results immediately.”

“What happened to Thomas?”

“I wish I knew.”

Her voice broke.

“He vanished after telling Richard he intended to go to the police.”

The room seemed to shrink again.

I looked at Grandpa’s case.

At the cassette.

At the paternity report.

And then at the officer standing beside the open locker.

“Search everything,” I said.

The investigator nodded.

An officer began removing folders one by one.

Halfway down, he stopped.

“There’s a false bottom.”

Martin moved closer.

The officer lifted a thin steel panel.

Underneath was a sealed envelope.

Across the front, in Grandpa’s handwriting, were six words.

IF THOMAS IS STILL MISSING, OPEN THIS.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Grandpa’s Hidden
