phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe says she wants to tell you herself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Warner left something for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fifteen years.<\/p>\n<p>Another dead man had left something behind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor won\u2019t say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I grabbed my coat.<\/p>\n<p>Ray saw me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHazel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s twenty minutes away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn good weather.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe roads are open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMostly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tyler stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou stay with Chloe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chloe surprised me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tyler looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re concussed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have nurses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at my son.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou stay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did not argue.<\/p>\n<p>Progress.<\/p>\n<p>Ray and I left.<\/p>\n<p>Forty minutes later, we entered a small assisted-living facility overlooking a snow-covered field.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor Pierce sat near a window in a green sweater.<\/p>\n<p>She was eighty-six.<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes were sharp.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me once and said, \u201cYou have Dennis\u2019s stubborn face now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew my husband?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWarner?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did he sell me the land?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She folded her hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he trusted Dennis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not me.<\/p>\n<p>Dennis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey served on a volunteer fire crew together years earlier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had never known.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWarner discovered Robert had allowed Calvin to conduct unauthorized drilling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor minerals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else did they find?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor looked toward Ray.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe stays.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Then she reached into a drawer.<\/p>\n<p>A sealed envelope.<\/p>\n<p>My name on the front.<\/p>\n<p>Warner\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe gave me this eleven years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you send it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me not to unless someone came asking about the pump house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My breath stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m asking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She handed it over.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Black and white.<\/p>\n<p>A drilling trench.<\/p>\n<p>Three men.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Hale.<\/p>\n<p>Calvin Rourke.<\/p>\n<p>A younger Samuel Price.<\/p>\n<p>Behind them stood a rusted metal cylinder emerging from the earth.<\/p>\n<p>Not rock.<\/p>\n<p>Not pipe.<\/p>\n<p>Something manufactured.<\/p>\n<p>On the back Warner had written:<\/p>\n<p>They found this below the mineral layer. Robert said bury it again.
