Richard pursued her aggressively.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe man who raised you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I flinched at the correction.<\/p>\n<p>Martin saw it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard was married to Margaret. Eleanor knew that. She rejected him repeatedly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne night after a company event, something happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His phrasing made my stomach knot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does \u2018something happened\u2019 mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t there. Eleanor never described it fully.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Richard assault her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin looked toward the investigator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said she did not consent to what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa pushed her chair away from the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh my God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at Martin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you were with her around the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo nobody knew whose child I was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor believed I was your father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBelieved?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe never tested it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDNA testing was possible, but not as simple or accessible as it is now. More importantly, she was terrified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood that much.<\/p>\n<p>If Richard could use millions of dollars, family loyalty and corporate power as weapons now, I could imagine him younger and less cautious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Grandpa know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor told him Richard might be the biological father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he brought me into Richard\u2019s house anyway?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s face showed pain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe believed that was the safest place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed without humor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat worked beautifully.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe underestimated his son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently everybody did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa had been sorting the letters while we spoke.<\/p>\n<p>She stopped suddenly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese dates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She arranged five envelopes in a row.<\/p>\n<p>The earliest was from when I was fourteen.<\/p>\n<p>The next when I was sixteen.<\/p>\n<p>Then seventeen.<\/p>\n<p>Nineteen.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a gap,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Martin leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa pointed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom\u2019s letter says Eleanor tried to return when Claire was six. You said she returned again when Claire was twenty-eight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCorrect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo where are the letters from those years?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin looked at the bundle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said twenty-seven letters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose are the ones your grandfather recovered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecovered from where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard\u2019s office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That changed everything again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou mean these letters reached Dad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe opened them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I picked up one envelope.<\/p>\n<p>The seal had been sliced.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-two years ago, Eleanor had written to me.<\/p>\n<p>Richard had read it.<\/p>\n<p>Then hidden it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandpa found them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had access to Richard\u2019s office during the first financial investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa turned over several envelopes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese aren\u2019t consecutive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Dad probably kept others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The investigator spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf documents remain at his home or office, the search teams may find them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa looked toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly are they searching?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinancial records primarily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell them about the letters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The investigator stepped away to make a call.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Vanessa.<\/p>\n<p>Her mascara had streaked beneath one eye. Hours earlier I would have noticed with some private satisfaction.<\/p>\n<p>Now I barely recognized the sister sitting beside me.<\/p>\n<p>She looked stripped of every certainty Dad had given her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy are you helping me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked surprised.<\/p>\n<p>Then hurt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you\u2019re my sister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre we?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou heard Martin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t care whose DNA you have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer came instantly.<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been horrible to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI suppose I deserved that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not interested in pretending tonight fixed thirty years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not asking you to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Then she touched the letters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I\u2019m still your sister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For once there was no performance in her voice.<\/p>\n<p>I believed she believed it.<\/p>\n<p>Whether I could was another question.<\/p>\n<p>Martin cleared his throat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you want certainty about paternity, we can arrange testing immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou kept this secret for thirty-six years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd now you want a cheek swab to settle it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want you to have whatever truth I can still give you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould you want the result?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes held mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I have wondered every day since you were born.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words struck harder than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>I looked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why didn\u2019t you find me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot directly. I watched from a distance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anger rose again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou watched me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour grandfather allowed me limited information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter firing you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe rehired me two days later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said he fired you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did. Then he came to my apartment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he realized I had protected Eleanor for the same reason he wanted her protected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you never thought that detail was worth mentioning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was getting there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa gave him a sharp look.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to start getting places faster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under different circumstances, I might have laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Martin continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour grandfather asked me to remain involved unofficially. He was preparing to confront Richard after reviewing the altered estate documents and the money transfers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen he died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHeart attack?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer chilled me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does the death certificate say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMyocardial infarction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas there an autopsy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard opposed it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa whispered a curse.<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Grandma\u2019s crash had stopped looking accidental.<\/p>\n<p>Grandpa\u2019s heart attack was beginning to look different too.<\/p>\n<p>Mom had died of cancer, at least. I found myself clinging to the certainty of pathology reports and hospital rooms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened after Grandpa died?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard took control immediately. I had no standing. The estate documents I possessed were copies. The attorney holding originals abruptly retired and moved abroad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConvenient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Eleanor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you waited eight years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI continued investigating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMostly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you come to me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause your grandfather\u2019s final instruction was explicit. Richard could not know you were involved until evidence existed strong enough to survive exposure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought about the dinner.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s face when Martin entered.<\/p>\n<p>He had known immediately that whatever he had buried was returning.<\/p>\n<p>The investigator came back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey found additional correspondence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart jumped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard\u2019s home office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA locked fireproof box. More than forty envelopes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom Eleanor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeveral appear to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt dizzy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I see them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot tonight. They\u2019re evidence now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvidence of what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat depends on their contents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>She read something.<\/p>\n<p>Her expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe search team also found a passport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor Shaw\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin stood so abruptly his chair nearly fell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The investigator watched him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause she had it when she disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw it the night before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere was it found?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard Harrington\u2019s home safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words seemed to suck the air from the room.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa whispered, \u201cWhy would Dad have her passport?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p>The investigator received another message.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at Martin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was something inside it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA photograph.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned the phone so we could see an evidence image sent by the search team.<\/p>\n<p>The photograph showed Eleanor beside a motel pool.<\/p>\n<p>She was older than in the picture with baby me.<\/p>\n<p>On the back, someone had written two words.<\/p>\n<p>Ask Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>My cousin Daniel, who had admitted earlier that Dad told everyone I had volunteered to pay for dinner, was still sitting near the end of the table.<\/p>\n<p>Every head turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s face went white.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pushed back from the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The investigator stepped toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou may want to remain seated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said I don\u2019t know anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel was forty-one, five years older than me. He had worked for Harrington Supply briefly after college before leaving without explanation.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered Dad calling him unreliable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes met mine.<\/p>\n<p>Something in them frightened me.<\/p>\n<p>Not guilt.<\/p>\n<p>Recognition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew Eleanor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why is your name written on her photograph?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin moved closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere were you twenty-eight years ago?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was thirteen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin stopped.<\/p>\n<p>The math changed the question.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Eleanor couldn\u2019t have been telling Claire to ask Daniel back then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>I took the investigator\u2019s phone and enlarged the image.<\/p>\n<p>The photograph was old.<\/p>\n<p>The writing on the back wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>The ink looked fresh.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had written Ask Daniel recently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho wrote this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stood completely still.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>When he opened them, the fear was gone.<\/p>\n<p>Only resignation remained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin gripped the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve seen her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everything inside me stopped.<\/p>\n<p>I heard myself ask the only question that mattered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs she alive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/feeleverystory.online\/?p=14230\">Click here to continue reading: PART 7: Daniel Said My Mother Was Alive, Then Revealed Why She Had Returned Three Weeks Before Dad\u2019s Carefully Planned Dinner<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nobody spoke for several seconds.
