Marcus:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s answer came quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore he died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus swore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you waited eight years to mention that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought he was bluffing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalvin doesn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen where did Dennis put it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomewhere Hazel would eventually find.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hand moved toward the key in my pocket.<\/p>\n<p>Harbor Bend.<\/p>\n<p>Unit 214.<\/p>\n<p>The ledger was likely there.<\/p>\n<p>Not beneath the land.<\/p>\n<p>The buried box had held something else.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus said, \u201cAnd what was in the box?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel replied, \u201cCopies of the property files.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A long silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Samuel said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe proof of what happened to Dennis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Ray\u2019s hand closed around my wrist.<\/p>\n<p>Tyler looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>The cold seemed to vanish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to Dennis?\u201d Marcus asked.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel answered so softly I almost missed it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat Calvin paid to make look natural.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The world narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>Dennis had died of cancer.<\/p>\n<p>I had sat through appointments.<\/p>\n<p>Seen scans.<\/p>\n<p>Held him while he vomited after treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Watched his body shrink.<\/p>\n<p>Natural.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing about that could be faked.<\/p>\n<p>Could it?<\/p>\n<p>Marcus said, \u201cYou told me he was already sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what did Calvin do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe made sure Dennis never had time to talk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A branch snapped beneath my hand.<\/p>\n<p>Both men fell silent.<\/p>\n<p>Then Samuel called into the darkness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHazel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My blood froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou might as well come out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one moved.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s voice came again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know you\u2019re there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus muttered something.<\/p>\n<p>A flashlight beam swept toward us.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Ray.<\/p>\n<p>Then Tyler.<\/p>\n<p>No gun.<\/p>\n<p>No safe retreat.<\/p>\n<p>Our truck sat thirty yards away.<\/p>\n<p>Their vehicle blocked the path.<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom,\u201d Tyler whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped around the foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s flashlight found me.<\/p>\n<p>He looked older than he had hours earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Not tired.<\/p>\n<p>Exposed.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus stood beside him holding a crowbar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s Calvin?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel smiled sadly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still ask the wrong questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I\u2019m done letting you decide the questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus took one step forward.<\/p>\n<p>Ray emerged behind me.<\/p>\n<p>Then Tyler.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s face changed when he saw my son.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTyler. You never learn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tyler said, \u201cNeither do you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus raised the crowbar slightly.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Calvin do to Dennis?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s smile disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe accelerated an ending that was already coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus snapped, \u201cWe don\u2019t have time for this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDennis found the ledger. He copied files. He threatened Calvin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Hazel. You know the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s the end?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel took a slow breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDennis agreed to stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe agreed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Calvin threatened Tyler.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My son went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were young. Easy to frighten a father with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Tyler.<\/p>\n<p>He looked lost.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDennis gave Calvin most of the records back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut not the ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd not whatever he buried here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened after?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDennis got sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Calvin?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsed the illness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had access to someone in Dennis\u2019s treatment network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re saying Calvin interfered with his medical care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m saying Dennis\u2019s decline became useful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus suddenly swore and raised his phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Distant engines sounded from the road.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked toward the gate.<\/p>\n<p>He had seconds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s the ledger?\u201d he asked me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen find it before Calvin does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause if Calvin gets it, everyone who can connect him to the old network becomes disposable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIncluding you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s expression answered.<\/p>\n<p>He turned toward his vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus grabbed his coat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you going?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeaving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not leaving me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel shoved him.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus swung the crowbar.<\/p>\n<p>Ray moved.<\/p>\n<p>Tyler shouted.<\/p>\n<p>The world exploded into motion.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel ducked.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus slipped on packed snow.<\/p>\n<p>The crowbar struck the truck fender instead.<\/p>\n<p>A deputy\u2019s voice boomed from the distance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSheriff\u2019s department! Hands visible!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus froze.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel did not.<\/p>\n<p>He ran.<\/p>\n<p>Not toward the truck.<\/p>\n<p>Toward the trees.<\/p>\n<p>Harris appeared beyond the gate with two deputies.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus dropped the crowbar.<\/p>\n<p>Tyler raised his hands.<\/p>\n<p>Ray did the same.<\/p>\n<p>I stood motionless.<\/p>\n<p>Harris shouted at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHANDS!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I lifted them.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel disappeared into the junipers.<\/p>\n<p>A deputy went after him.<\/p>\n<p>Harris approached, furious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you not to disturb the site.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are standing in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTechnically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked ready to combust.<\/p>\n<p>Then I held out the ledger fragment.<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of why someone dug here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He took it carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you find it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pointed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNear those roots.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris studied the torn page.<\/p>\n<p>Then the empty hole.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was buried here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the woods where Samuel had disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut whatever it was, it contained proof about my husband\u2019s death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For eight years, I had mourned Dennis believing disease had been the only thief in our house.<\/p>\n<p>Now, on Christmas morning, I had to consider something far worse.<\/p>\n<p>Someone may have seen his illness as an opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>And if Samuel was telling the truth, the ledger did not merely explain stolen money.<\/p>\n<p>It could explain why my husband had died before he told me any of it.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/feeleverystory.online\/?p=14226\">Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Samuel Was Captured Before Sunrise, and the First Thing He Told Police Made My Husband\u2019s Illness Feel Like a Crime Scene<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Deputy Harris did not like the idea.
