custody.”

I wanted to argue.

Instead I asked, “Can you get to Harbor Bend?”

“Eventually.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“It’s the only honest one.”

Fair.

“Daniel, Calvin knows about the key.”

“I know.”

“He may go to the storage facility.”

“We’ve notified them not to grant access.”

“Good.”

I looked around my living room.

Strangers.

Neighbors.

Workers.

My tree.

The old train.

Everything familiar had become part of an investigation.

Then a small voice came from beside me.

“Ms. Hazel?”

Leo.

“What?”

He pointed at the locomotive.

“You dropped something.”

A folded scrap of paper lay beneath it.

I had removed the key and wax paper earlier.

I had not seen a second note.

I picked it up.

Dennis’s handwriting again.

Smaller.

Fainter.

I unfolded it.

Hazel—

If you found the key, Sam knows the train.

Do not trust him.

My heart thudded.

That confirmed what we already knew.

Then I read the next sentence.

But Sam is not the one I’m afraid of.

Ray leaned over my shoulder.

Beneath it, Dennis had written:

Calvin thinks the ledger proves his crimes.

It proves something worse.

I turned the paper over.

One final line.

The bypass parcel is not valuable because of the road.

I stared.

My seventeen acres.

The land Calvin had spent years maneuvering toward.

The land someone forged my signature to acquire.

If not because of the bypass, then why?

Another note had been squeezed into the margin.

Dig where the old pump house stood.

Ray read it twice.

“What pump house?”

I looked at him.

He knew.

We both knew.

The old Briggs yard had once used a shallow agricultural well.

A pump house stood on the seventeen-acre parcel until Dennis tore it down twelve years ago.

I had not visited that exact corner in years.

Harris saw our faces.

“What?”

I folded the note.

“Calvin doesn’t only want my land.”

“Why?”

“Because Dennis hid something on it.”

“What?”

“I don’t know.”

Ray stared toward the windows.

“Whatever it is, Calvin has probably been trying to reach it.”

A memory surfaced.

Surveyors.

Trespassers.

A strange request from High Desert Development to inspect soil conditions before I had agreed to sell.

I had refused.

Then Tyler’s debt exploded.

The forged power of attorney appeared.

Maybe the property transaction was never primarily about owning the land.

Maybe it was about gaining lawful access to whatever Dennis buried there.

I looked at the clock.

Christmas morning had arrived without any of us noticing.

Snow still fell.

My son was under police protection.

Chloe was alive.

Marcus and Samuel were missing.

Calvin was somewhere in the storm.

And under seventeen acres of frozen ground, my husband had left behind something powerful enough to keep dangerous men circling my family for eight years.

I folded Dennis’s note and put it beside the brass key.

For the first time all night, I knew exactly where the next question led.

Not to Calvin.

Not to Samuel.

Not even to the storage unit.

It led to my land.

And whatever my husband had buried there before he died.

Click
