Alone.<\/p>\n<p>They wanted me there.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe because something else was stored there.<\/p>\n<p>Ray saw the photo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re searching.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at the brass key in my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ledger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. If they knew where it was, they wouldn\u2019t need me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then another thought came.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnless Dennis kept something else there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I opened the flash drive on the laptop.<\/p>\n<p>Ignoring Daniel\u2019s instruction now.<\/p>\n<p>I searched for Dennis.<\/p>\n<p>Four files appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Three were tax documents.<\/p>\n<p>The fourth was an old scanned letter.<\/p>\n<p>Dated nine years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>From Dennis to Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Sam,<\/p>\n<p>I know what the transfers are.<\/p>\n<p>I know who authorized them.<\/p>\n<p>Do not call Hazel.<\/p>\n<p>Do not come to the house.<\/p>\n<p>Meet me at the yard tomorrow at six.<\/p>\n<p>Bring Nolan.<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>The letter ended with one sentence.<\/p>\n<p>If anything happens to me, I have made copies.<\/p>\n<p>Ray read it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour husband confronted them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEight years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A year before Dennis\u2019s diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>Meaning the secret had existed long before his illness.<\/p>\n<p>Another file was attached beneath the letter.<\/p>\n<p>A photograph.<\/p>\n<p>My old equipment yard office.<\/p>\n<p>Dennis stood beside a metal cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>Behind him, partly reflected in a window, was another man.<\/p>\n<p>Not Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>Not Nolan.<\/p>\n<p>I zoomed in.<\/p>\n<p>The face was blurred but familiar.<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>Ray leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knew the man.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone in town knew him.<\/p>\n<p>He had built shopping centers, warehouses, subdivisions.<\/p>\n<p>He had donated to hospitals and schools.<\/p>\n<p>He had attended Dennis\u2019s funeral.<\/p>\n<p>He had shaken my hand and told me my husband was one of the most decent men he had ever known.<\/p>\n<p>Calvin Rourke.<\/p>\n<p>Developer.<\/p>\n<p>Millionaire.<\/p>\n<p>And current owner of the company trying to buy my seventeen acres.<\/p>\n<p>The message arrived at 2:52.<\/p>\n<p>Eight minutes.<\/p>\n<p>BRING THE DRIVE OR THE WOMAN DIES.<\/p>\n<p>A photo followed.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe again.<\/p>\n<p>This time another figure stood behind her.<\/p>\n<p>Only part of his face showed.<\/p>\n<p>But it was enough.<\/p>\n<p>Calvin Rourke.<\/p>\n<p>The man my dead husband had apparently been afraid to name.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/feeleverystory.online\/?p=14224\">Click here to continue reading: PART 8: The Man Behind My Husband\u2019s Secret Finally Showed His Face, and He Offered Me One Choice That Could Destroy My Son<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I had forty-nine minutes until three o\u2019clock.
