follow.”

“I won’t.”

The siren grew louder.

I finally exhaled.

One crisis had shifted.

Not ended.

Shifted.

Ray pointed ahead.

“My God.”

Our headlights reached the bottom of my street.

A pickup sat near my driveway.

Empty.

My house was dark except for one basement window.

No porch lights.

No Christmas decorations.

No generator glow.

I stopped the truck.

“Elena said the generator was running.”

Ray already had his flashlight.

“Could have run out of fuel.”

“Not yet.”

We moved closer.

The pickup’s driver door stood open.

No footprints were visible.

Snow had covered them.

Then I saw my front door.

Open.

Not broken.

Open.

Someone had used a key.

I called Elena.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Ray reached for the door handle.

I caught his arm.

“No.”

“We have to check.”

“Not through the front.”

We moved around back.

The kitchen door was shut.

Locked.

I used my key.

Inside, the house smelled wrong.

Cold smoke.

Coffee.

Wet wool.

No voices.

I whispered, “Elena?”

Nothing.

“Leo?”

Silence.

Ray swept his light toward the basement door.

Closed.

We approached.

I knocked twice.

“Elena?”

Something moved below.

Then a child’s voice.

“Ms. Hazel?”

My knees nearly gave out.

“Leo.”

Locks clicked.

The basement door opened.

Elena stood behind it holding my fireplace poker like a spear.

When she saw me, she lowered it.

“What happened?”

“Generator shut off.”

“Why?”

“Someone cut the fuel line.”

Ray swore.

“Everyone okay?”

“Yes.”

“Where’s the man?”

“Gone.”

“Did he come inside?”

Elena looked at me.

“Not while we were downstairs.”

That answer contained a problem.

“What?”

She held up a piece of paper.

“He left this on your kitchen table.”

I took it.

One sentence.

YOU HAVE UNTIL 3:00 TO RETURN WHAT DENNIS STOLE.

My husband’s name looked impossible on the page.

Dennis had been dead eight years.

I read the sentence again.

Ray said nothing.

Elena watched me carefully.

“What does it mean?”

“I don’t know.”

But something Samuel had said returned to me.

Dennis knew.

More than you think.

I looked at the clock.

2:11 a.m.

Forty-nine minutes.

Whoever stood above Marcus, Nolan, Samuel, and perhaps Chloe believed my dead husband had stolen something.

Something connected to the drive.

The money.

The land.

Maybe everything.

And suddenly the oldest question in the room was no longer what my son had done.

It was what my husband had done long before any of us knew there was a secret to inherit.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: My Dead
