I still haven\u2019t heard Marcus tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ray gave me a look.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhoever has her knows about the drive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho knew we found it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTyler.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe, if she saw it before she was taken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd whoever put it there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I opened the laptop again while Ray watched the road behind us.<\/p>\n<p>Something had bothered me about the file names.<\/p>\n<p>They were too orderly.<\/p>\n<p>Tyler was smart, but organization had never been his strength.<\/p>\n<p>The account records were named by date.<\/p>\n<p>Legal documents were indexed.<\/p>\n<p>Screenshots were numbered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis wasn\u2019t Tyler\u2019s archive,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Ray glanced over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot originally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou sure?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis tax files are named things like FINAL2 and USETHISONE.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat does sound like him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was assembled by someone methodical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I opened the transfer spreadsheet.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of transactions.<\/p>\n<p>Amounts moving through different companies.<\/p>\n<p>My stolen seventy-nine thousand eight hundred dollars was there.<\/p>\n<p>So were several deposits from Tyler\u2019s personal account.<\/p>\n<p>One account appeared repeatedly as a final destination.<\/p>\n<p>BRIGGS PROPERTY SERVICES OPERATING.<\/p>\n<p>My company.<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat makes no sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoney is coming back into my business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I added the entries.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly one hundred eighty thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p>More than Tyler had stolen.<\/p>\n<p>Ray stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Marcus stole from you and put money back?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot Marcus necessarily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I examined dates.<\/p>\n<p>The deposits started four months before Tyler\u2019s theft.<\/p>\n<p>Some were labeled equipment reimbursements.<\/p>\n<p>Others consulting revenue.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized none of them.<\/p>\n<p>Then I saw the authorization field.<\/p>\n<p>NV.<\/p>\n<p>Nolan Vance.<\/p>\n<p>My former attorney.<\/p>\n<p>A chill moved through me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone has been using my company to wash money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ray went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan they make it look like you knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they wanted to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould that be why they need your signature?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The scheme widened all at once.<\/p>\n<p>The land.<\/p>\n<p>The accounts.<\/p>\n<p>The fake legal authority.<\/p>\n<p>Tyler\u2019s debt.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe\u2019s forgery.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe my family had not been the target in the simple way I first believed.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe we were cover.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang again.<\/p>\n<p>Tyler.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you safe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone outside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s your mother-in-law?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCold but awake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need you to answer something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is Nolan Vance?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>That was enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus introduced us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast spring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hand tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInvestment advice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom a lawyer who handled my property?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you give him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing at first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tyler exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCopies of some company records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ray closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat records?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOld statements. Parcel information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou handed my private business records to a man I fired years ago?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know you\u2019d fired him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not the point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Tyler. You keep saying that tonight. You do not know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was desperate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were dishonest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The silence that followed was painful.<\/p>\n<p>Then Tyler said, \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No excuse.<\/p>\n<p>Just yes.<\/p>\n<p>That stopped me more effectively than an argument would have.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened after that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNolan said he could restructure the debt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe never explained.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you sign anything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI signed loan papers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn whose name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A whisper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Ray stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought the power of attorney covered it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew about the power of attorney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot that it was fake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did you learn?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you still said nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was trying to fix it before you found out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every disaster that night seemed to come from someone trying to fix something before I found out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTyler, listen carefully. Nolan may be using my company to move money. Do you understand what that means?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He was silent.<\/p>\n<p>Then: \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means this could be bigger than debt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I heard a sound on his end.<\/p>\n<p>A door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTyler?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone\u2019s upstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBasement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you to lock the door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho else is downstairs?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one. I moved Mom\u2014Chloe\u2019s mom\u2014to the downstairs bedroom earlier, but Marcus\u2019s kids are upstairs with\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A floorboard creaked through the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTyler.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He whispered, \u201cSomeone just unlocked the kitchen door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not go upstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall 911.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI already did.
