She had accepted help because pride mattered less than keeping him safe.<\/p>\n<p>Now Tyler\u2019s family was doing the same thing from a distance.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever I felt about Chloe, her mother had done nothing to me. Marcus\u2019s children had done nothing to me. Fear did not become deserved merely because it happened beneath someone else\u2019s roof.<\/p>\n<p>I called the county emergency number.<\/p>\n<p>When the dispatcher answered, I gave my name and address.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have generator power, working heat, food, blankets, and space. My driveway is accessible. I also have a commercial snowplow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was a brief pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMs. Briggs, are you offering your residence as an emergency warming site?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the people gathered in my living room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI suppose I am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The dispatcher took my details.<\/p>\n<p>Within forty minutes, my quiet house stopped being mine alone.<\/p>\n<p>An elderly man arrived with his diabetic wife after their furnace failed. Two utility workers brought another stranded motorist. Someone heated soup. Someone else started coffee. Wet gloves lined the radiator. There\u2019s no impact damage, no broken fitting, no ice displacement that would explain it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you saying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m saying somebody appears to have turned it off manually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gripped the edge of the workbench.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you certain?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs certain as we can be without a full investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My eyes moved toward the storm beyond the garage.<\/p>\n<p>Tyler had heard someone outside.<\/p>\n<p>The camera had gone offline.<\/p>\n<p>Then the gas stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you have any idea who did it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why are you calling me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause your son\u2019s security system stores footage remotely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe camera went down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne camera did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel asked permission to send a short clip recovered from the system.<\/p>\n<p>A file appeared on my phone seconds later.<\/p>\n<p>Ray leaned over my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>The footage showed Tyler\u2019s driveway before the worst snow arrived. Visibility was poor but not impossible. A dark figure crossed beside the garage.<\/p>\n<p>The person stopped at the gas line.<\/p>\n<p>Crouched.<\/p>\n<p>Reached down.<\/p>\n<p>Then stood.<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>The figure walked several steps away before pausing.<\/p>\n<p>For a second, I thought the clip had frozen.<\/p>\n<p>Then the person turned toward the camera.<\/p>\n<p>Snow streaked across the image.<\/p>\n<p>The face came into view.<\/p>\n<p>I knew him.<\/p>\n<p>Ray whispered my name.<\/p>\n<p>I replayed the final seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Same face.<\/p>\n<p>Same heavy shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>Same way of carrying his head slightly forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Ray looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou recognize him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did not answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Memories came instead.<\/p>\n<p>A family barbecue three summers ago.<\/p>\n<p>A request for twenty thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p>A business proposal written on four pages of nonsense.<\/p>\n<p>My refusal.<\/p>\n<p>A smile that had remained polite while the eyes behind it hardened.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe\u2019s brother.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>I handed Ray the phone.<\/p>\n<p>He watched the clip.<\/p>\n<p>When it ended, he looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s Marcus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would he shut off Tyler\u2019s gas?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou two have history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot enough for this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Years earlier Marcus had asked me to invest in a contracting venture. I had reviewed the numbers and refused. The business failed six months later.<\/p>\n<p>Afterward he blamed everybody except himself.<\/p>\n<p>Including me.<\/p>\n<p>But resentment over a failed loan did not explain endangering his sister, her mother, two children, and Tyler.<\/p>\n<p>Unless something else was happening.<\/p>\n<p>I called Tyler.<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I texted:<\/p>\n<p>LOCK EVERYTHING. MARCUS WAS OUTSIDE YOUR HOUSE.<\/p>\n<p>The message showed delivered.<\/p>\n<p>No reply.<\/p>\n<p>Ray took the truck keys from their hook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStarting the engine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can think while the diesel warms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I followed him beneath the carport.<\/p>\n<p>The engine turned over heavily, then caught.<\/p>\n<p>Snow shook from the hood.<\/p>\n<p>I was climbing toward the driver\u2019s seat when my phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>Tyler.<\/p>\n<p>Not a call.<\/p>\n<p>A message.<\/p>\n<p>Mom, Chloe knows what you found.<\/p>\n<p>I read it twice.<\/p>\n<p>Ray saw my expression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I showed him.<\/p>\n<p>His brow tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow could Chloe know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t told her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wouldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTyler?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe only knows what I just texted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the six words again.<\/p>\n<p>Mom, Chloe knows what you found.<\/p>\n<p>My first thought was that Tyler meant the security footage.<\/p>\n<p>My second was much worse.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps Chloe knew because the footage was not the thing Tyler was talking about.<\/p>\n<p>I called him.<\/p>\n<p>He answered before the first ring finished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the basement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe garage is flooding. A pipe burst.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Water rushed loudly behind him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s Chloe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUpstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd her mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiving room. Barely awake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The force in his answer stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t come here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive minutes ago you were begging me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen tell me what changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His breathing sounded shallow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhoever shut off the gas might still be nearby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Ray.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you see Marcus?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Chloe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen explain your message.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tyler did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTyler.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked Chloe why you were suddenly calling about the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said you were probably checking records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt something cold settle beneath my ribs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat records?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTyler, stop protecting her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen tell me what you know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice cracked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found papers in her desk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat papers?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour property records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped moving.<\/p>\n<p>Behind me, the truck engine idled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy property?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCopies of the deed to your house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned against the door.<\/p>\n<p>The house where I had raised Tyler.<\/p>\n<p>The house I owned outright.<\/p>\n<p>The house Chloe had just told me felt better without me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would she have those?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a power of attorney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a moment I heard only the diesel engine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hand tightened around the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never signed one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas there a signature?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is the document now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe took it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPut her on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tyler went silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTyler?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I straightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean, gone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe left about twenty minutes ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this storm?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe took the SUV.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did you let her leave?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know what she was doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she take the documents?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A long pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pieces did not fit.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus had deliberately disabled Tyler\u2019s heat.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe possessed documents involving my property.<\/p>\n<p>Now she had fled into a blizzard carrying them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLock the basement door,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not come upstairs until I call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>Ray climbed into the passenger seat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTyler\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou sure?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I dropped the plow blade.<\/p>\n<p>Metal scraped across packed snow.<\/p>\n<p>The truck pushed forward into the storm.<\/p>\n<p>And as my house disappeared behind us, one thought became impossible to ignore.<\/p>\n<p>This had stopped being a family argument.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had used the blizzard to hide something.<\/p>\n<p>And whatever Chloe was carrying might explain why.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/feeleverystory.online\/?p=14220\">Click here to continue reading: PART 4: We Found Chloe\u2019s Empty SUV in the Snow, and the Papers Beside It Carried a Signature I Never Wrote<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Elena watched me from beside the fireplace as I lowered the phone.
