on notes tucked into books he gave me as a child.

Seeing my name written by him now felt like hearing a dead man call across eight years.

Dad had been taken downstairs, but the investigators had allowed one woman to remain near the door while Martin explained what had been found.

I touched the envelope.

“Why did Grandpa give this to knew?”

“Yes.”

I opened Grandpa’s envelope.

Three folded pages rested inside.

The first began with my name.

I had to stop after the first line.

Vanessa moved closer.

“Read it.”

I did.

Grandpa wrote that if the letter had reached me, circumstances had prevented him from correcting mistakes he had allowed inside the family.

He described me as quieter than Vanessa but not weaker.

He worried Dad mistook kindness for surrender.

My vision blurred.

For years, I believed Grandpa died disappointed that I refused to join Harrington Supply Group.

Dad had encouraged that belief.

Apparently Grandpa understood why I stayed away.

The letter explained that Harrington Supply had been built to protect the family, not give one person leverage over everyone else.

Grandpa had discovered evidence that deeply troubled him.

If he could not act himself, Martin was to secure the evidence until Richard could no longer suppress it.

“The right moment,” I said.

Martin nodded.

“What did Grandpa consider the right moment?”

“When your father lost control of the records.”

I unfolded the second page.

Grandpa wanted Vanessa and me to control the company together.

If Dad attempted to alter estate documents, transfer assets improperly, or use either daughter’s identity without permission, Martin was authorized to release everything to attorneys and law enforcement.

Vanessa sat down.

“He knew Dad might use me.”

“He feared it.”

She covered her mouth.

All evening I had watched the foundations of her identity crack.

Being Dad’s favorite had once looked like power.

Now she was discovering the price.

I turned to the third page.

It was much shorter.

One sentence stopped me.

Grandpa wrote that there was something else I needed to know.

Martin became tense.

“What?”

He said nothing.

I continued.

Grandpa referred to the night Grandma died.

Twelve years before his death, her car had left a rural road and crashed.

We were told she had been driving alone.

We were told weather and speed were factors.

We were told Dad had been downtown at a business dinner.

Grandpa’s letter said their relationship changed after that night.

Vanessa leaned over my shoulder.

“What happened?”

I read farther.

Grandma had intended to change her estate.

Part of her property was to pass directly to Vanessa and me.

Martin removed an old deed.

Forty-two acres near Lake Geneva.

The cabin property.

Dad sold it nine years ago.

He had always claimed Grandma left it to him.

The deed showed otherwise.

Her share was supposed to enter a trust for her granddaughters.

Vanessa whispered, “He stole this too?”

“I can’t make that legal conclusion,” Martin said. “But the estate records were altered.”

I reached Grandpa’s final underlined sentence.

My breath caught.

He instructed us, if Dad continued claiming Grandma’s death was merely an accident, to ask why he lied to police about his location that night.

Vanessa stared at Martin.

“What does that mean?”

Martin opened another file.

Dad’s police statement placed him downtown.

A gas receipt placed him less than four miles from Grandma’s crash at 9:14 p.m.

“That could belong to anyone,” Vanessa said, though she sounded as if she were trying to convince herself.

“Possibly.”

Martin produced a towing report.

Dad’s vehicle had been taken to a private repair shop early the next morning.

Front-end damage.

A broken headlight.

Paint transfer along one side.

My skin went cold.

“What explanation did he give?”

“A deer.”

The investigator near the door had gone very still.

Vanessa whispered, “Where is Dad now?”

“Downstairs.”

The investigator touched an earpiece.

A few minutes later, the doors opened again.

Dad was brought back inside.

His coat was gone.

So was much of his confidence.

The investigator warned him that he did not have to answer questions.

Dad looked at the documents anyway.

He saw the gas receipt.

Then the towing report.

Something inside his face collapsed.

I stood.

“Were you near Grandma that night?”

His eyes moved toward Martin.

“Richard,” the investigator said, “I strongly advise you not to answer questions without counsel.”

Dad ignored her.

“She was upset.”

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“Why was she upset?”

Dad rubbed his forehead.

“Your grandmother liked making threats.”

“What threats?”

“She wanted to divide property. She wanted to undermine everything I had built.”

“You mean everything Grandpa built,” I said.

His eyes flashed.

“You know nothing about it.”

I held up the towing report.

“Were you following her?”

He looked away.

Vanessa’s voice cracked.

“Dad.”

“Yes.”

One word.

The room seemed to contract around it.

I forced myself to continue.

“Why?”

“To talk.”

“On a rural road?”

“She wouldn’t stop.”

My stomach turned.

“What happened to your car?”

Dad’s eyes closed.

The investigator stepped forward.

“Richard, stop.”

He didn’t.

“She was driving too fast.”

Vanessa began crying.

“Did you hit her?”

“No.”

The answer came instantly.

Too instantly.

Martin said nothing.

I looked at the repair report again.

“Your car had front-end damage the next morning.”

“A deer.”

“And paint transfer?”

Dad swallowed.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Did you hit Grandma’s car?”

He stared at her.

For years, Vanessa had been the one person in our family whose disappointment could reach him.

Perhaps that was why his composure finally broke.

“I was trying to make her pull over.”

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“What did you do?”

“I got close.”

“How close?”

“She kept accelerating.”

“Dad.”

“I tapped the car.”

The investigator moved immediately.

“That’s enough.”

But Dad kept speaking.

“One time.
