will?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several relatives inhaled sharply.<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared at her hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemove it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had never heard Vanessa refuse him so plainly.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s voice lowered. \u201cYou don\u2019t understand what your grandfather was like near the end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin spoke. \u201cI met him during that period.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s eyes snapped toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay out of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re describing a man whose mental condition is relevant to the documents I examined.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father was sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhysically, yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou weren\u2019t family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s expression became unreadable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I wasn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something passed between them.<\/p>\n<p>Again I noticed it.<\/p>\n<p>Again neither explained.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa lifted the disputed will.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Grandpa sign this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked around the room.<\/p>\n<p>His audience had changed.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier they had laughed when he humiliated me.<\/p>\n<p>Now seventeen people were waiting for him to answer.<\/p>\n<p>He finally said, \u201cI did what was necessary to preserve the company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa went still.<\/p>\n<p>Martin touched his lapel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad frowned. \u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe admission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His hand moved toward the small recording device clipped beneath Martin\u2019s jacket.<\/p>\n<p>Dad lunged.<\/p>\n<p>Two cousins stepped between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard!\u201d my uncle shouted.<\/p>\n<p>Martin didn\u2019t move.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe recording has already been transmitted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stopped.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes found mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou planned this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked genuinely stunned.<\/p>\n<p>That hurt in a strange way.<\/p>\n<p>Not because he was angry.<\/p>\n<p>Because after thirty-six years he still believed I was incapable of planning anything he couldn\u2019t control.<\/p>\n<p>Six months earlier, I had doubted the first records Peter sent me.<\/p>\n<p>Then I checked them.<\/p>\n<p>Numbers rarely confess dramatically.<\/p>\n<p>They whisper.<\/p>\n<p>A duplicated invoice.<\/p>\n<p>A payment posted twice under slightly different vendor names.<\/p>\n<p>A consulting firm registered to a mailbox.<\/p>\n<p>A property purchased by one entity and paid for by another.<\/p>\n<p>Once I knew where to look, Harrington Supply Group\u2019s accounts began telling a story.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had spent years laughing at my profession.<\/p>\n<p>He never learned what forensic accountants actually you have believed me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She opened her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Then closed it.<\/p>\n<p>Three months earlier she had called me an embarrassment at Thanksgiving.<\/p>\n<p>Two months earlier she suggested Dad cut me out of his estate because I wasn\u2019t sufficiently loyal.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight she had smiled when he pushed a four-figure bill toward me.<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice was quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stepped away from the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis circus is finished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin closed one section of the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad grabbed his coat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTry stopping me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey already searched your office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad turned slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Martin continued. \u201cInvestigators executed a warrant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa gripped the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA warrant?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The offshore transfers had changed everything. Once Martin traced corporate money through international accounts, our private investigation crossed into territory neither of us could keep private.<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou reported me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin answered. \u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had no authority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had an obligation once I identified evidence of potential crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad glanced around the table.<\/p>\n<p>He seemed to search for allies.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody volunteered.<\/p>\n<p>Finally he looked at Vanessa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you\u2019re my daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her laugh was broken and bitter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou put companies in my name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI protected you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou used my signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI gave you everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa reached for the diamond bracelet on her wrist.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had given it to her on her thirty-fourth birthday.<\/p>\n<p>She unclasped it.<\/p>\n<p>Then placed it beside his untouched drink.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re emotional.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I\u2019m finally paying attention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad turned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>Hatred had replaced panic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think you won.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t a competition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt always was with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. It was with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou wanted the company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou wanted revenge because I chose Vanessa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence struck the old wound exactly where he intended.<\/p>\n<p>But something had changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted a father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>I swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted a family that didn\u2019t make me audition for a place at the table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I picked up the dinner check.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment everyone watched as though I were about to surrender.<\/p>\n<p>I took out my credit card.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa whispered, \u201cClaire, don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m paying for what I ordered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I signaled the waiter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy sparkling water, salad and entr\u00e9e. Put those on this card.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the remaining balance?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I slid the folder toward Dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly seven thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p>After everything Martin had exposed, that stupid check still seemed to humiliate him.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps because the financial records were complicated.<\/p>\n<p>The dinner wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone understood it.<\/p>\n<p>He had invited his daughter to be mocked and billed for the privilege.<\/p>\n<p>The private dining room doors opened.<\/p>\n<p>Two men entered, followed by a woman who showed Dad her badge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard Harrington?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s face emptied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need you to come with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then, unexpectedly, he smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Not warmly.<\/p>\n<p>Knowingly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still think you understand what\u2019s happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt a chill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded toward Martin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk him who started this investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Claire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Martin.<\/p>\n<p>He closed his folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s smile widened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo ahead. Tell her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho contacted you first?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire, there are things\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad answered for him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour grandfather.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room became silent.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandpa died eight years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut three months before he died, he hired Martin Graves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward Martin.<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t deny it.<\/p>\n<p>My mind raced backward through six months of conversations.<\/p>\n<p>His strange reaction when I first said Harrington.<\/p>\n<p>The questions he sometimes knew to ask before I supplied the background.<\/p>\n<p>The way he had found estate records unusually quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew Grandpa?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin looked toward the investigators waiting near the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI worked for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad gave a dry laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow tell her why.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>The woman investigator touched Dad\u2019s arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He ignored her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour brilliant investigator didn\u2019t stumble onto our family eight years later, Claire. He was already there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Martin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Grandpa hire you to investigate?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s eyes stayed on mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMissing money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt that time, roughly two million dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom Harrington Supply?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho did he suspect?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Dad answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa sat down hard.<\/p>\n<p>I felt as though the floor had shifted.<\/p>\n<p>Our investigation had not begun when Peter contacted me.<\/p>\n<p>It had not begun six months ago.<\/p>\n<p>Grandpa had seen the first signs eight years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>And Martin had known.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin looked down at his folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause your grandfather gave me instructions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat instructions?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad laughed again as the investigators took his arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCareful, Martin.
