Bridget can cure.<\/p>\n<p>Caroline:<\/p>\n<p>No. Stop.<\/p>\n<p>My pulse changed.<\/p>\n<p>That mattered.<\/p>\n<p>Not enough.<\/p>\n<p>But it mattered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you do after he refused?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI froze my lending facility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dana had told us Caroline was trying to pull money from Northbridge.<\/p>\n<p>We had assumed cash-flow fears.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps this was part of it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn&#39;t you contact me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>That was the question she could not finance away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf Gregory?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf exposure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>If she warned me, she would reveal her own role.<\/p>\n<p>So she stopped lending and left me inside the machine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou protected yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd hoped Gregory would clean it up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe escalated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Ruth?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline&#39;s expression shifted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t know about Ruth until later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe twelve targets?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face changed more sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat twelve?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Priya watched her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou haven&#39;t seen Bridget&#39;s spreadsheet?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barlow looked genuinely confused too.<\/p>\n<p>Priya did not show it.<\/p>\n<p>She named several people.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur Bell.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel Reeves.<\/p>\n<p>Me.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth Palmer.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret Ellis.<\/p>\n<p>Others.<\/p>\n<p>Then Martin.<\/p>\n<p>Caroline stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The response came immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGregory would not target Martin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin still owed me money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently Gregory considered that leverage exhausted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I watched Caroline absorb the phrase.<\/p>\n<p>Something in her face collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>Not compassion.<\/p>\n<p>Recognition.<\/p>\n<p>She had believed herself the lender.<\/p>\n<p>The owner.<\/p>\n<p>The person above the system.<\/p>\n<p>But Gregory had begun categorizing her assets, her debtors, her relationships without her.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps he had categorized her too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShow me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Priya refused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline looked angry.<\/p>\n<p>Good.<\/p>\n<p>Anger makes people careless.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGregory has no authority to use my capital that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said, \u201cYou keep saying authority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe exceeded it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Arthur?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou gave him a machine and objected only when he stopped asking which direction to drive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFair would have been Arthur keeping his house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFair would have been Samuel Reeves dying without believing everyone thought he was confused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFair would have been Ruth knowing what the movers were actually coming for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I touched the email between us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou do not get fair from me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barlow said the meeting should end.<\/p>\n<p>Caroline ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGregory has records at a storage facility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Priya&#39;s pen stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat records?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOriginal client files from Vale Transitional Services.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline gave an address.<\/p>\n<p>Barlow swore under his breath.<\/p>\n<p>She continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was supposed to destroy duplicates after the company closed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut he didn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI paid the storage bill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even now.<\/p>\n<p>A bill.<\/p>\n<p>Always a bill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cContracts. Correspondence. Closing records. Possibly recordings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur Bell?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel Reeves?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many clients?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHundreds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The scale changed instantly.<\/p>\n<p>Not all would be victims.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps most were legitimate.<\/p>\n<p>But hundreds of files meant the pattern could stretch farther than any of us knew.<\/p>\n<p>Priya began making calls before Caroline had even left the building.<\/p>\n<p>Her attorney protested.<\/p>\n<p>Caroline did not.<\/p>\n<p>At the door, she stopped beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question unsettled her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is too large to mean anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat should I be sorry for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPick one thing you actually understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline stood quietly.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cI am sorry I knew you objected and decided your objection was less reliable than the people who wanted your property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was specific.<\/p>\n<p>That was real.<\/p>\n<p>I nodded once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe you are sorry for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She waited.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps for forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p>I offered none.<\/p>\n<p>After she left, Priya returned from the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAuthorities are moving to preserve the storage facility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course there was.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caroline&#39;s attorney had quietly provided another document before the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>A personal financial statement Gregory had submitted while seeking emergency financing.<\/p>\n<p>It listed his assets.<\/p>\n<p>Companies.<\/p>\n<p>Accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Properties.<\/p>\n<p>One liability stood out.<\/p>\n<p>A private debt of more than six hundred thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Creditor:<\/p>\n<p>Arthur Bell Estate.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur&#39;s estate?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Gregory owe Arthur&#39;s estate money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Priya turned to the attached page.<\/p>\n<p>A settlement agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Not the one we knew about.<\/p>\n<p>A later agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Gregory had personally promised repayment after Arthur&#39;s niece challenged portions of the original transaction.<\/p>\n<p>He had paid almost none of it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen was this signed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFour years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur Bell had not simply lost his house and disappeared into a facility.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had fought back.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had forced Gregory to acknowledge a debt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Priya read the signature.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur Bell himself.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement had been executed six months after the records Gregory relied upon claimed Arthur lacked capacity to manage his affairs.<\/p>\n<p>A court had accepted Arthur&#39;s competency to settle his own claim.<\/p>\n<p>The contradiction was devastating.<\/p>\n<p>Gregory had known.<\/p>\n<p>Not suspected.<\/p>\n<p>Known.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur was competent.<\/p>\n<p>And he had built Northbridge anyway.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/feeleverystory.online\/?p=14130\">Click here to continue reading: PART 22: Arthur Bell Had Fought Back Years Before Me, and the Records Gregory Hid Showed Exactly How the Scheme Learned to Survive<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Caroline Mercer arrived twelve minutes early.
