No exceptions.

I stared at the words.

Not a declaration of innocence.

A declaration of authority.

Richard had placed himself at the top.

Then came Ward’s private message to Merton.

R is losing nerve.

Merton replied:

Then stop asking him.

The final structure emerged.

Richard had begun the conspiracy.

Ward had engineered it.

Aaron had enabled it.

Brooke had fed it.

Merton had financed it.

But as the prize grew and the plan weakened, Merton had begun operating around Richard.

And somewhere between fraud and desperation, the conspiracy had fractured into competing versions of how far they were willing to go.

At seven-thirty, Mercer received another call.

Search teams had located David Merton.

Not at a cabin.

Not at an airport.

At Henderson.

Parcel Seven.

He had driven directly onto the property.

His vehicle was empty.

The gate chain had been cut.

Fresh footprints led toward the abandoned quarry.

Officers followed.

Near the old excavation they found Merton’s coat.

His phone.

And an open metal survey case.

Inside were geological maps and a handheld GPS.

But Merton himself was gone.

Then an officer noticed something else.

An old service tunnel appeared on one of Walter Lawson’s maps.

Its entrance lay beneath the quarry’s northern wall.

The same area where the original contamination records and lithium samples had been taken.

The tunnel had been omitted from every modern survey Holt Ridge possessed.

And according to the GPS left behind, Merton had marked a point deep inside it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 21: Merton Vanished Into the Quarry Tunnel Carrying Geological Maps, and What Search Teams Found Underground Changed the Value of Everything Above

Richard Lawson changed the moment Mercer mentioned Samuel.
