Merry Christmas, I&#39;ve been helping people steal from you for six years, but good news, I stole your documents before they could?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t smile.<\/p>\n<p>Neither did she.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy the anonymous envelope?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat wasn&#39;t me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first one?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe note in my office?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarla\u2019s handwriting?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>He was already taking notes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Aaron?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLawson?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo somebody else was in my house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you went Christmas morning, was the envelope already there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooke frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat envelope?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I believed her.<\/p>\n<p>That was the disturbing part.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrooke, who else knew the greenhouse code?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAaron.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLawson?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lawson\u2019s assistant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Emily know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe handled contractor invoices sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mercer wrote the name.<\/p>\n<p>Then Brooke said, \u201cThere\u2019s someone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every muscle in my body tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAaron called him David.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never heard one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did David do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you meet him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout four years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard\u2019s office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he look like?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOlder. Maybe sixty. Gray hair. Expensive clothes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not useful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they discuss?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooke stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid asked whether you still signed every acquisition personally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing. Aaron answered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mercer asked, \u201cAnything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooke nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid said they shouldn&#39;t move until you had something worth taking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold.<\/p>\n<p>Henderson.<\/p>\n<p>They had waited.<\/p>\n<p>Not because the scheme was unfinished.<\/p>\n<p>Because Holt Ridge had not yet become valuable enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is David?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Richard seem to work for him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooke thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAaron?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked frightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey treated him like a partner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mercer asked whether she could identify him from photographs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He left to arrange it.<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>Brooke looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMiranda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know saying sorry doesn&#39;t matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I moved toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#39;s one more thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>She swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard wasn&#39;t angry only about Hanover Street.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just said\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told Aaron once that your father knew what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened with what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Dad know Richard?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard said he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My father had never mentioned that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly what did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooke searched her memory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said, \u2018Thomas Hale remembers more than he admits.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse slowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast summer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you ask Dad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Richard told me not to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at my sister.<\/p>\n<p>For six years she had followed instructions because every lie made the next one easier.<\/p>\n<p>Now one of those lies pointed somewhere I hadn&#39;t expected.<\/p>\n<p>My father.<\/p>\n<p>I left the interview room and called him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Brooke okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.
