dollars.<\/p>\n<p>She covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Then he told her about the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Mom went white.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe sent that to Brooke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom lowered her hand.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Finally she said, \u201cBecause we&#39;re afraid of what she&#39;ll do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The truth sat there between us.<\/p>\n<p>Not favoritism exactly.<\/p>\n<p>Fear.<\/p>\n<p>Years of accommodating the person most likely to explode.<\/p>\n<p>Megan&#39;s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>She stepped away.<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought you didn&#39;t need us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho told you that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes big project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI invited you to the opening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe thought you did it because you felt obligated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrooke said\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held up my hand.<\/p>\n<p>Mom stopped.<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#39;t listen to another sentence beginning with Her name is Evelyn Carter.
