I had sent them the address. Half-empty glasses sat on the coffee table. Beyond the windows, morning light was beginning to reveal fresh snow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, you didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her certainty irritated me more than the accusation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI invited you here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said you had bought a place outside Asheville.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said I was building it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad murmured something in the background.<\/p>\n<p>Mom lowered her voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe thought you were renovating another property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor twenty months?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe didn&#39;t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then she asked, \u201cIs it really yours?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe entire property?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the land?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that greenhouse?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite everything, I glanced toward the glass structure beyond the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, Mom. The greenhouse too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She exhaled slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much did it cost?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>Not How are you?<\/p>\n<p>Not Why didn\u2019t we know?<\/p>\n<p>Not We should have come.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow is that the first question you ask?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t. I\u2019m just trying to understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnderstand what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow we could have gotten this so wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>I stood and walked toward the windows.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGotten what wrong?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She didn&#39;t answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>When she finally spoke, her voice was quieter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe thought you were having problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned from the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat problems?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinancial problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A cold feeling moved through me that had nothing to do with the snow outside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho told you that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom went silent.<\/p>\n<p>I already knew.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrooke?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was worried about you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrooke was worried about me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said your projects were costing more than expected. She said the house had stretched you too far.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse began beating harder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did she tell you that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the last year. Different times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I tried to remember conversations with Brooke.<\/p>\n<p>There had been remarkably few.<\/p>\n<p>She occasionally asked about work, but usually with the detached curiosity of someone asking about traffic in another city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you ever ask me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe didn\u2019t want to embarrass you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer was so perfectly my parents that I had to sit down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou believed I was in financial trouble for a year and decided the considerate thing was never mentioning it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe thought you&#39;d tell us if you needed help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen have I ever asked you for help?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom had no answer.<\/p>\n<p>Dad said something behind her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Dad say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said maybe we should come today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the table where breakfast dishes from my guests still waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word came quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Mom went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou canceled Christmas with me because Brooke needed groceries. You don&#39;t get to discover my house on television and suddenly decide today works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt something in me become very still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIsn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe weren\u2019t trying to hurt you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou rarely are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is that supposed to mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means you keep treating intent as though it erases outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMiranda\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy graduation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy birthday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Holt Ridge award.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s always different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is always a reason. There is always something Brooke needs. There is always another weekend for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom began crying.<\/p>\n<p>Normally, that would have ended the conversation.<\/p>\n<p>I would have softened. Apologized. Reassured her that I understood.<\/p>\n<p>This time I waited.<\/p>\n<p>She finally whispered, \u201cWe didn&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the house around me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn&#39;t know because you never asked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom sniffed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe thought you were struggling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you still didn&#39;t ask.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That landed.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, neither of us spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mom said, \u201cBrooke told us you weren\u2019t really doing Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hand tightened around the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said you were probably going away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the fireplace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told you I was going away?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said you had business commitments and might not even be home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you had my invitation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe thought plans had changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Brooke told you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you call me to check?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>Because checking with me would have required questioning Brooke.<\/p>\n<p>And questioning Brooke was something my family had spent years avoiding.<\/p>\n<p>After the call ended, I remained on the sofa staring at nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Megan came downstairs twenty minutes later wearing one of my old sweatshirts and carrying two mugs of coffee.<\/p>\n<p>She had stayed in the guest room after the roads became too icy to drive.<\/p>\n<p>She handed me a mug.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou look terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMerry Christmas to you too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I told her.<\/p>\n<p>She sat opposite me without interrupting.<\/p>\n<p>When I finished, she rested both hands around her mug.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Brooke told them you were broke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd told them you weren\u2019t actually hosting Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd they believed her instead of asking you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Megan looked toward the ceiling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m trying to formulate a response appropriate for Christmas morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t bother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m failing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite myself, I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Then my phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>Brooke.<\/p>\n<p>Merry Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>That was all.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the message.<\/p>\n<p>Megan watched me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you answering?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou sure?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I set the phone down.<\/p>\n<p>For perhaps the first time in my life, I didn&#39;t feel responsible for keeping the emotional temperature comfortable.<\/p>\n<p>We made breakfast.<\/p>\n<p>Around eleven, Megan left after the roads improved.<\/p>\n<p>I cleaned slowly.<\/p>\n<p>I carried glasses into the kitchen. Folded blankets. Collected plates. Put leftovers into containers.<\/p>\n<p>Normal tasks helped.<\/p>\n<p>Then, while moving the Christmas cards from the mantel, I found a white envelope I didn&#39;t recognize.<\/p>\n<p>My name was written on the front.<\/p>\n<p>Miranda.<\/p>\n<p>No stamp.<\/p>\n<p>No return address.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a photocopy of a bank statement.<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>The account holder\u2019s name had been covered with black marker.<\/p>\n<p>Three transactions had been circled.<\/p>\n<p>$4,800.<\/p>\n<p>$7,200.<\/p>\n<p>$3,500.<\/p>\n<p>Beside each transaction was the same description.<\/p>\n<p>HOLT RIDGE DEVELOPMENTS.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom of the page someone had written:<\/p>\n<p>Ask Brooke where the money came from.<\/p>\n<p>I read it twice.<\/p>\n<p>Then three times.<\/p>\n<p>My first thought was that this was some ridiculous prank.<\/p>\n<p>My second was that nobody at the party knew enough about Brooke to make it.<\/p>\n<p>I checked the security cameras.<\/p>\n<p>Guests had arrived through the front door all evening. People carried bags, coats, food, gifts.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing obvious.<\/p>\n<p>I called Megan.<\/p>\n<p>She answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou miss me already?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice changed her tone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I described the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t throw anything away,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t planning to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you make those transfers?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t recognize the amounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould they be company transactions?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHolt Ridge receives payments constantly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut something feels wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I opened my laptop.<\/p>\n<p>Our accounting system required authentication. I logged in and searched the three amounts.<\/p>\n<p>The first existed.<\/p>\n<p>But it wasn&#39;t from Brooke.<\/p>\n<p>It came from a contractor reimbursement.<\/p>\n<p>The second belonged to a property escrow transfer.<\/p>\n<p>The third came from a client deposit.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the photocopied statement.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had taken legitimate Holt Ridge transactions and presented them as though they belonged to a different account.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang again.<\/p>\n<p>This time Dad\u2019s name appeared.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He sounded uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother told me you two spoke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to apologize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor which part?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He breathed out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI probably deserve that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should have come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should have asked you directly about the business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd we should never have let Brooke speak for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sentence caught my attention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly has Brooke been telling you about me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know where to start.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStart anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said you borrowed money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My entire body stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the bank statement on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t remember exactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThirty thousand, maybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went silent around me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad, I have never borrowed money from Brooke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe showed us statements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked down at the three circled transactions.<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStatements showing payments to Holt Ridge?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stopped speaking.<\/p>\n<p>That was answer enough.<\/p>\n<p>I picked up the anonymous page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad, I need you to listen carefully.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Brooke ever show you a transaction for forty-eight hundred dollars?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heartbeat became suddenly loud.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeven thousand two hundred?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree thousand five hundred?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMiranda, how do you know that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the front door.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had entered my home carrying evidence.<\/p>\n<p>And whoever it was had known exactly what Brooke had shown my parents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I\u2019m holding a copy of those transactions right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/feeleverystory.online\/?p=14082\">Click here to continue reading: PART 3: A Neighbor\u2019s Phone Call Exposed the First Lie, but the Papers Left in My House Pointed Toward Something Far More Dangerous<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I barely slept.
