I could hear the faint hum of the air conditioner and the muffled voices of tellers beyond the office door.<\/p>\n<p>Bridget recovered first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re all acting as though I stole something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked down at the documents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven&#39;t accused anyone of anything. I&#39;m explaining what was submitted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pointed toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe can&#39;t manage these accounts forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s my decision,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou keep saying that like nothing affects anyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly were you afraid would happen if I continued controlling my own money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her mouth tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnswer Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bridget looked genuinely wounded.<\/p>\n<p>That might have worked on him the day before.<\/p>\n<p>It did not work now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was trying to make sure everything was organized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I watched Curtis&#39;s jaw flex.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat word again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOrganized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me Mom wanted help organizing her future. You didn&#39;t tell me you were trying to control her bank accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn&#39;t controlling anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas cleared his throat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe requested authority would have provided substantial access.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Curtis closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Bridget turned on Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has vision problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat does not make her incompetent,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>I appreciated the simplicity of his answer.<\/p>\n<p>Bridget had spent months turning ordinary facts into evidence against me.<\/p>\n<p>Bad eyesight became mental decline.<\/p>\n<p>A walker became helplessness.<\/p>\n<p>Age became permission.<\/p>\n<p>My attorney had taught me to separate facts from the story other people built around them.<\/p>\n<p>I removed my medical evaluation from my purse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould you like this for your records?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas read the first page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bridget laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you&#39;ve been setting me up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ve been making sure you couldn&#39;t set me up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Curtis stared at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>I wondered how many moments from the previous year he was replaying.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps he remembered Bridget correcting me at dinner.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps he remembered telling me not to be difficult.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps he remembered signing forms at the kitchen counter without reading them.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas turned to another page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe attempted transfer was blocked automatically because of the restrictions previously placed on the account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Curtis looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas told him.<\/p>\n<p>Silence followed.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis&#39;s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBridget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She crossed her arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn&#39;t going anywhere permanently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere was it going?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose account?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurtis, please.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She finally named an account he did not recognize.<\/p>\n<p>His expression sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur emergency account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#39;t have an emergency account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI opened one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMonths ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith whose money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked away.<\/p>\n<p>That was enough.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis stood and walked to the window.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, he stared into the parking lot.<\/p>\n<p>When he turned back, his face was pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much debt are we in?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bridget&#39;s eyes widened.<\/p>\n<p>I hadn&#39;t expected the question.<\/p>\n<p>Neither had she.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;ve been panicking about money for a year. You keep saying we need more savings. You keep asking about Mom&#39;s house. Now you&#39;re moving her money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s between us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You dragged my mother into it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas glanced toward me, silently asking whether I wanted the conversation stopped.<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>Bridget sat very still.<\/p>\n<p>Then she began to cry.<\/p>\n<p>I had seen those tears before.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis had too.<\/p>\n<p>This time he didn&#39;t move toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI made some mistakes,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat mistakes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInvestments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She named a number.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat can&#39;t be right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were credit cards too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBridget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeveral.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd loans?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her silence confirmed that as well.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis sat down again.<\/p>\n<p>The anger disappeared from him.<\/p>\n<p>Shock replaced it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me we were fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was trying to fix it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Mom&#39;s money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith money that would eventually\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Too late.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEventually what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bridget pressed her lips together.<\/p>\n<p>I already knew.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis did too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome to me?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s not how I meant it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am still alive,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Bridget covered her face.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke for several seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas finally said that the bank would preserve records of the attempted transaction and review prior activity.<\/p>\n<p>That opened another door.<\/p>\n<p>For more than a year, Bridget had used a card I had authorized for groceries, prescriptions and household expenses.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas explained that a review would be necessary.<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow far back?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs far as you want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bridget looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face told me what the audit would find before the audit even began.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis saw it too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stood abruptly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can&#39;t sit here while everyone treats me like a criminal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou tried to move my mother&#39;s money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt failed!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Curtis stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>The sentence hung there.<\/p>\n<p>It failed.<\/p>\n<p>Not: I didn&#39;t do it.<\/p>\n<p>Not: I would never do that.<\/p>\n<p>It failed.<\/p>\n<p>Bridget seemed to hear herself.<\/p>\n<p>She reached for her purse.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis didn&#39;t stop her.<\/p>\n<p>At the door, she turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you coming?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He remained seated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurtis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face went blank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re choosing her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me, then back at his wife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn&#39;t about choosing between you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt obviously is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. It&#39;s about whether what you did was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes filled again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t know what I&#39;ve been dealing with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen you should have told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was trying to save us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were willing to destroy Mom to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bridget opened the door.<\/p>\n<p>She left without another word.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis stared after her.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas gave us several minutes before discussing next steps.<\/p>\n<p>There would be an investigation.<\/p>\n<p>My attorney would receive the records.<\/p>\n<p>Account access would remain frozen against anyone except me.<\/p>\n<p>No property transfer could proceed.<\/p>\n<p>No one could quietly move me into Fairview.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in months, the facts around my life belonged to me again.<\/p>\n<p>Outside the bank, Curtis stood beside his truck.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew Bridget wanted to discuss the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>A truth I had not yet heard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much did you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said it was too large for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe thought selling eventually made sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEventually?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He rubbed his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought you had agreed to consider it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you ever ask me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His answer took a long time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause it was easier to believe her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was probably the most truthful thing he had said all day.<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to understand something, Curtis. Bridget could not have gotten this far without people deciding it was easier not to listen to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That evening, he returned to my house alone.<\/p>\n<p>We sat on the porch.<\/p>\n<p>The new deadbolt caught the orange light of sunset.<\/p>\n<p>For a while, neither of us spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then Curtis said, \u201cI&#39;m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should have listened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should have read what I signed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should have protected you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I let that one sit between us.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, I said, \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He wiped his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>I reached for his hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI changed those locks because I was frightened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked surprised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf Bridget?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot exactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the house Walter and I had built our lives inside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was afraid I would discover that my own son had helped someone take my life away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Curtis bowed his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI almost did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He squeezed my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ll fix what I can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou cannot fix everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can change what happens next.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Over the following weeks, the investigation uncovered enough to end every argument Bridget had made.<\/p>\n<p>Documents had been prepared without my informed consent.<\/p>\n<p>Statements about my competence were unsupported.<\/p>\n<p>Attempts had been made to alter control of my finances.<\/p>\n<p>The plan for Fairview had existed long before anyone asked whether I wanted to leave my home.<\/p>\n<p>My mother&#39;s silver chest returned to its place in the dining room.<\/p>\n<p>The house remained mine.<\/p>\n<p>Bridget was required to collect her belongings under supervision.
