With doctors, she became concerned. With Curtis, wounded. With neighbors, cheerful. With me, she preferred patient superiority.<\/p>\n<p>That morning, none of those expressions quite fit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no right to go through my belongings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked into the SUV.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother&#39;s silver chest is sitting in your car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was protecting it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom you selling my house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor, you don&#39;t understand those documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen explain the photographs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey&#39;re estimates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFuture planning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The phrase was so carefully chosen that I almost admired it.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the folder again and found a page bearing the logo of a real-estate company. Beneath it was my address.<\/p>\n<p>Even without reading the small print, I understood enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long have you been talking to an agent?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven&#39;t listed anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat wasn&#39;t my question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She reached for the folder.<\/p>\n<p>I moved it behind my walker.<\/p>\n<p>Her hand stopped.<\/p>\n<p>For one instant, I wondered whether she might actually take it from me by force.<\/p>\n<p>Then a neighbor&#39;s dog barked across the street, and Bridget stepped back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re making this into something ugly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t put my mother&#39;s property in your car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you, I was protecting it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else have you removed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThink carefully before you lie again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That landed.<\/p>\n<p>Her lips tightened.<\/p>\n<p>She began walking toward me, then stopped when I reached into my purse.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t pull out a weapon.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled out a folded copy of the court order my attorney had given me.<\/p>\n<p>Bridget stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProtection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She took the paper before I could stop her and read it quickly.<\/p>\n<p>The color left her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou went to a lawyer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLong enough ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes raced down the page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe judge disagreed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told a judge lies about us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told the truth about myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked toward the house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can&#39;t throw Curtis out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven&#39;t thrown anybody out. I have protected my property until we determine what you&#39;ve been doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I&#39;ve been doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have spent four years taking care of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid I ask you to prepare documents giving you control of my finances?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid I ask you to tell people I was mentally confused?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her mouth closed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid I ask you to investigate Fairview?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now she stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>That was the moment she understood exactly how much I knew.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were listening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard you talking in my kitchen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was a private conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt took place in my house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou misunderstood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you put money down at Fairview?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her silence answered.<\/p>\n<p>I felt an unexpected calm settle over me.<\/p>\n<p>Until that moment, part of me had still wanted her to produce some explanation capable of restoring the family I thought I had.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, she had confirmed it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Curtis know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course he knows we&#39;re planning for your future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes he know you&#39;re planning to sell my home?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knows this house is too much for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn&#39;t what I asked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bridget rubbed her forehead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re eighty-one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can barely see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI see you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That stopped her.<\/p>\n<p>A car passed slowly. Somewhere nearby, a sprinkler clicked across a lawn.<\/p>\n<p>Bridget lowered her voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think you can manage everything alone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t have to manage everything alone. I simply get to choose who helps me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFamily asks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her phone remained in her hand.<\/p>\n<p>I nodded toward it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall Curtis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked surprised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou want me to?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want him here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She walked toward the end of the driveway and dialed.<\/p>\n<p>While she spoke, I took the folder onto the porch.<\/p>\n<p>My hands began trembling only after I sat down.<\/p>\n<p>That annoyed me.<\/p>\n<p>I had survived Walter&#39;s death. I had survived surgery, grief, money shortages, raising a stubborn son and watching my body slowly refuse tasks it once performed without thought.<\/p>\n<p>Yet a folder could make my hands shake.<\/p>\n<p>I thought of Curtis.<\/p>\n<p>As a boy, he had been incapable of keeping secrets. Every Christmas he accidentally revealed what Walter had bought me. Every school incident came spilling out before I finished asking what happened.<\/p>\n<p>Somewhere along the way, that boy had become a man who signed documents without reading them because his wife told him everything was fine.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t know whether that made him innocent.<\/p>\n<p>I only knew it made him dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>Bridget finished her call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe&#39;s coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re going to regret humiliating him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m not the one who used his signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That struck something.<\/p>\n<p>She recovered quickly, but not quickly enough.<\/p>\n<p>So Curtis had signed something.<\/p>\n<p>My attorney had warned me about that possibility.<\/p>\n<p>Bridget folded her arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no idea how difficult things have been for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn&#39;t the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen would be better? After the house is sold?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned away.<\/p>\n<p>I watched her and remembered small incidents that had once seemed unrelated.<\/p>\n<p>Bridget asking what the house might sell for.<\/p>\n<p>Bridget wanting to know whether Walter had left investments.<\/p>\n<p>Bridget insisting that she should have a debit card for groceries.<\/p>\n<p>Bridget complaining that taxes and maintenance were wasting money on a property \u201cone person didn&#39;t need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Each event had been a thread.<\/p>\n<p>Now I could see the rope.<\/p>\n<p>Forty minutes later, Curtis&#39;s truck came around the corner.<\/p>\n<p>My heart tightened before he even parked.<\/p>\n<p>He stepped out wearing jeans and the blue work shirt he favored on weekends. His face was tense.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not hello.<\/p>\n<p>Just Mom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk your wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bridget approached him immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe changed the locks while I was at church. She won&#39;t let me inside. She&#39;s been going through my things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Curtis looked at the door.<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did you change the locks?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Bridget has been preparing to take control of my property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, come on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Three words.<\/p>\n<p>They hurt more than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>Not because he disagreed.<\/p>\n<p>Because he dismissed me before seeing anything.<\/p>\n<p>I lifted the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRead this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bridget moved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurtis, don&#39;t\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>Something in her urgency made him take the folder.<\/p>\n<p>He opened it.<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk Bridget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#39;s planning material,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis turned a page.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>He stopped at an email.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes moved across it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRead it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt says they need to move quickly once ownership is settled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOwnership of what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurtis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word hung between us.<\/p>\n<p>He kept reading.<\/p>\n<p>His face grew pale.<\/p>\n<p>Another page mentioned preparing Fairview before prospective buyers began visiting.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis looked at Bridget.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said Mom wanted to look at assisted living.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cI didn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Curtis rubbed the back of his neck.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou thought what Bridget told you to think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, that&#39;s not fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pointed toward the SUV.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs that fair?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He followed my hand.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time he noticed the silver chest.<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy is Grandma&#39;s chest in your car?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bridget exhaled sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was moving valuables somewhere safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis returned to the folder.<\/p>\n<p>Near the back, he found the document I had been waiting for him to see.<\/p>\n<p>I knew it from the shape of the page even though I couldn&#39;t read the print.<\/p>\n<p>His signature was at the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis stopped breathing for a second.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs that yours?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>He stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you sign?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it was authorization paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHelping with your insurance. Medicare. Things like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you read it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The anger I had expected never came.<\/p>\n<p>What I felt was worse.<\/p>\n<p>Grief.<\/p>\n<p>My own son had put his name on a statement concerning my competence without reading what he was swearing was true.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou signed something about my mind without speaking to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou chose not to know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bridget stepped between us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is exactly why I didn&#39;t want this conversation happening like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Curtis turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me those forms were routine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were part of planning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat planning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me rather than him.<\/p>\n<p>That told me enough.<\/p>\n<p>My phone chimed inside my purse.<\/p>\n<p>I nearly ignored it.<\/p>\n<p>Then it chimed again.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled it out and enlarged the notification until I could make out the amount.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>There had been an attempted transfer from my savings account.<\/p>\n<p>A large one.<\/p>\n<p>I handed the phone to Curtis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRead that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did.<\/p>\n<p>His entire posture changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bridget&#39;s eyes moved toward the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>The softness vanished from his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBridget, why is someone trying to move money out of Mom&#39;s account?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can explain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at the phone again.<\/p>\n<p>Then back at his wife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy are you moving her money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bridget grabbed her purse from the car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was protecting our future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Curtis stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur future?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time that morning, I saw something fracture between them.<\/p>\n<p>Bridget had expected me to fight for my house.<\/p>\n<p>She had not expected Curtis to discover he might have to decide whose side he was on.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/feeleverystory.online\/?p=14071\">Click here to continue reading: PART 3: My Son Finally Read the Papers He Had Signed and Learned What His Trust in Bridget Had Cost Me<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cGive me the folder.\u201d Bridget&#39;s voice was low enough that anyone passing on the sidewalk might have mistaken our conversation for something ordinary.
