Not them.”

“Yes.”

The distinction was important.

Networks like Vane’s depended on making people believe everything had been predetermined.

Predestination is another kind of control.

At 3:08, Marcus was shown the Stewardship file.

He cried.

Not dramatically.

No performance.

He stared at the pages and asked to stop.

Then asked to continue.

He learned Elliot had recommended placing him at the volunteer event.

Learned Arden had monitored early dates.

Learned Edward had approved ongoing observation.

Learned Vane’s structure had seen his marriage as a potential access route long before Marcus began accepting money.

“What did he say?” Chloe asked Ortiz later.

“That he didn’t know.”

“I believe that.”

“So do Arizona.

She agreed to speak by video.

She had never met Leon knowingly.

Never been paid by Crane.

Never opened Chloe’s package.

But she remembered a repairman who visited twice.

Claimed to be checking electrical wiring.

I had no memory of it.

Teresa did.

“Because he made me uncomfortable,” she said.

Description:

Mid-forties at the time.

Scar above left eyebrow.

Leon.

He had entered my house under a maintenance pretext.

Twice.

He had failed to find the package because Adrian and Laura had hidden it inside a box of unremarkable college materials.

The simplest camouflage.

Normal life.

At 5:26, Bell revealed one more fact.

Adrian had not hidden only evidence.

He had hidden a list of people he believed could safely rebuild investigations after the compromised officials were exposed.

“What list?” Ortiz asked.

“Independent prosecutors, judges, inspectors.”

“Where?”

“He said Eleanor would know where to look.”

I did not.

Then Bell added:

“He called it the clean slate.”

That phrase stirred memory.

Not from a case.

From Adrian.

A joke.

Once, during an argument about compromised evidence, he had said:

“If the whole system burns, you start with a clean slate.”

I had replied:

“No. You start with people you can prove are clean.”

He had laughed.

The bank box contained three binders.

We had examined evidence.

Not the binder covers.

Ortiz called the evidence team.

Inside the back cover of Adrian’s third binder, beneath glued fabric, technicians found a folded sheet.

Names.

Some retired.

Some dead.

Some still serving.

People Adrian believed were outside Edward’s influence.

At the top:

ELEANOR WARD.

Second:

DANIEL REEVES.

Third:

LUIS ORTIZ.

Lena’s father.

Chloe looked at Lena.

“Your father was clean.”

Ortiz stared at the name for a long time.

Then nodded.

Leon had used his twin brother’s identity because Luis was trusted.

The entire impersonation strategy had depended on stealing credibility from a good man.

Another pattern.

At the bottom of the list was a handwritten line.

If Eleanor leaves, Daniel will carry it.

Daniel read it twice.

“I didn’t.”

“You didn’t know.”

“I should have.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“You do not get to convict yourself using evidence hidden from you.”

He smiled faintly.

“You taught me that.”

“I teach many things people ignore.”

At 7:02, federal leadership announced creation of an independent task force outside the compromised chains identified in Phoenix.

Not because Adrian’s list was legally binding.

Because the evidence showed structural contamination.

The people still alive on the Clean Slate list were consulted where appropriate.

Controls were layered.

No single office owned the case.

It was the response Adrian had tried to design eleven years too early.

That evening Chloe stood with me outside the federal building.

Cold air.

Traffic.

No reporters allowed near the entrance.

She looked exhausted.

“So this is the part where everything gets better?”

“No.”

“I knew you’d say that.”

“This is the part where everything gets harder in a more organized way.”

“That sounds awful.”

“It usually is.”

She smiled.

Then her expression shifted.

“What happens to
