trust.

Again.

“Where did Martha take him?”

“Arden says he does not know.”

“Bell?”

“Left separately.”

“Then why did Bell later return and drive Adrian?”

“Good question.”

The photograph from locker 19 showed Adrian entering Bell’s car after Bell claimed he had left.

Maybe Bell returned after Martha moved Adrian.

Maybe the timestamp revealed a later stop.

The timeline was still broken.

At 4:18, forensic review of the photograph found a location marker reflected in the car window.

Airport parking structure.

Different level.

Forty-seven minutes after the recorded confrontation.

Adrian entered Bell’s car there.

Meaning Martha had transported him from the annex to the airport garage.

Then transferred him back to Bell.

Why?

No answer.

Until Ortiz received bank records.

Thomas Bell received $250,000 from Bayfield the next morning.

“Payment,” Chloe said.

“Likely.”

“For what?”

No one needed to say it.

At 5:07, Martha’s attorney called federal investigators.

She was willing to surrender voluntarily the next morning for questioning under a negotiated proffer.

“Why wait?” I asked.

“Medical issue, supposedly.”

“Do you believe that?”

“No.”

“Then watch her.”

“They are.”

At 5:44, her phone went dark.

Her home security system disconnected.

A car registered to her husband left the property.

Agents followed.

The vehicle stopped at a church.

Martha entered through a side door.

Did not exit.

Agents went inside.

Empty sanctuary.

Empty offices.

Rear door open.

A second vehicle had been waiting.

She was gone.

Again.

Another respectable person disappearing just before the truth caught up.

At 6:22, Chloe’s replacement phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

One image.

Martha Keene standing beside a car.

Timestamp: eleven minutes earlier.

Alive.

Looking directly at the camera.

Below it:

SHE DID NOT KILL ADRIAN.

Then:

BELL DID.

Chloe looked at me.

“Thomas?”

I read the next message.

AND HE DID IT BECAUSE ADRIAN FOUND OUT WHO MARCUS REALLY BELONGED TO.

Marcus again.

Not as husband.

Not as son.

As leverage.

A person born into a scheme before he had any idea what the scheme was.

I typed one question myself.

WHO ARE YOU?

The reply came immediately.

ASK SAMUEL WHY HE NEVER TOLD MARCUS THAT EDWARD WAS NOT HIS ONLY FATHER.

I stared at the words.

Chloe frowned.

“What does that mean?”

I did not know.

But Samuel did.

When Ortiz confronted him, his expression answered before his mouth opened.

“What are they talking about?” I asked.

Samuel looked at Chloe through the interview-room glass.

Then at me.

“Edward fathered Marcus biologically.”

“We know.”

“But Samuel raised him.”

“Yes.”

“That makes Samuel his father too.”

Chloe exhaled, irritated.

“That’s not a secret.”

Samuel shook his head.

“No.”

“Then what?”

His voice became almost inaudible.

“There was a third man who claimed Marcus.”

The room went cold.

“Who?”

Samuel looked at me.

“Robert
