Before she sold it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The photograph metadata dated it eleven years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel Dalton had not merely crossed paths with Victor\u2019s financial world.<\/p>\n<p>He had known Adrian.<\/p>\n<p>Closely enough to stand beside him on a boat dock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny context?\u201d I asked Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFile name says partners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPartners in what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnknown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next document answered part of it.<\/p>\n<p>A corporate filing.<\/p>\n<p>Adrian Cole and Samuel Dalton had both been minority owners of a consulting firm called Meridian Advisory.<\/p>\n<p>Victor Hale had been its principal client.<\/p>\n<p>The company dissolved the same month Adrian vanished.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel Dalton left the country six months later.<\/p>\n<p>And supposedly died in Panama less than two years after that.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Chloe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Marcus ever mention Meridian?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Sylvia?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Victor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot that I remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel scrolled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are payment records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeridian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMillions over several years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd after dissolution?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe money moves to different vendors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>North Pine was one of them.<\/p>\n<p>The fraud Marcus participated in had not begun with Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>It was an inheritance.<\/p>\n<p>A structure passed from one generation of shell companies to another.<\/p>\n<p>But that still did not tell us who left the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>At 7:22, an officer knocked.<\/p>\n<p>He handed me another evidence sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFound beneath your mailbox.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a small brass key.<\/p>\n<p>No note.<\/p>\n<p>No label.<\/p>\n<p>Just the key.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas it there earlier?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Yard was searched.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen someone placed it today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re reviewing cameras.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned it over.<\/p>\n<p>A number was stamped along one edge.<\/p>\n<p>417.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe looked at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a locker key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus had one like it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis key drawer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat locker?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBus terminal?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face changed.<\/p>\n<p>The same place Marcus had abandoned her.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel called Ramos immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Within forty minutes, police were back at the downtown terminal.<\/p>\n<p>Locker 417 sat at the far end of a row near platform seven.<\/p>\n<p>The exact platform where I had found Chloe.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody opened it until a warrant was obtained.<\/p>\n<p>At 10:18, Ramos called.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should sit down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sitting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is new.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was in the locker?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA briefcase.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo identification.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cContents?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPaper records. Old photographs. A cassette recorder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA recorder?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd one sealed envelope addressed to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the dark window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey haven\u2019t opened it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause written across the front is: ELEANOR HAYES \u2014 IF ADRIAN DISAPPEARS.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room became silent around me.<\/p>\n<p>The envelope looked, from the photograph Ramos sent, at least a decade old.<\/p>\n<p>Yellowed edge.<\/p>\n<p>Faded ink.<\/p>\n<p>Not something planted yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had stored evidence at the same terminal where Chloe was later abandoned.<\/p>\n<p>Whether Marcus knew that or not, I could not yet tell.<\/p>\n<p>But the coincidence was too precise to ignore.<\/p>\n<p>Then Ramos told me the last item recovered from the briefcase.<\/p>\n<p>A photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Adrian Cole standing beside Samuel Dalton.<\/p>\n<p>On the back, in Adrian\u2019s handwriting, was a date.<\/p>\n<p>And beneath it, six words:<\/p>\n<p>IF ONE OF US VANISHES, VICTOR KNOWS WHY.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/feeleverystory.online\/?p=13970\">Click here to continue reading: PART 7: Adrian Cole Had Left Me a Warning Eleven Years Earlier, but the Recording Named Someone Who Was Supposed to Be Dead<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I had not thought about Adrian Cole in years.
