I wanted the responding supervisor aware that evidence could be disappearing while we spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Seven minutes later, the terminal entrance filled with movement.<\/p>\n<p>Paramedics brought a stretcher. Two patrol officers entered behind them. Unlike some people, I have guests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe says something happened last night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe would.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe lost control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe found out something she didn\u2019t like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t your business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Bennett.<\/p>\n<p>He wrote two words on his pad.<\/p>\n<p>KEEP TALKING.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you bring another woman into the house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Marcus chuckled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo she told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A woman spoke somewhere near him.<\/p>\n<p>Young voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus, your mother wants you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He covered the receiver, but not well enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive me a minute, babe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bennett\u2019s pen stopped.<\/p>\n<p>I felt something hard settle in my stomach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs that her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe woman Chloe confronted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor, marriage changes. Adults understand that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Chloe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe refuses to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened when she refused?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His tone sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe made a scene.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you push her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe put her hands on my mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you push her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got her out of my house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour shared house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did she lose her shoe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t she have her coat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn\u2019t deserve anything from me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bennett looked up.<\/p>\n<p>I kept my voice neutral.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was Sylvia cleaning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus stopped breathing for a beat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe said Sylvia cleaned after you took her away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never said that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Chloe did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>This one lasted longer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to stay out of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m her mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re an old woman with too much time on her hands. You have no idea how the law works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bennett looked at the credential wallet beside the recording phone.<\/p>\n<p>I looked back at him.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Chloe starts making accusations, my attorneys will tear her apart. The company has people who bill more in an hour than you probably live on for a month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I let him finish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnjoy Thanksgiving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>Bennett stared at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe genuinely doesn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bennett leaned back. \u201cThat might be the most expensive assumption he makes today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel called fifteen minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>The security provider had confirmed an active account associated with Marcus\u2019s address. A preservation process was underway.<\/p>\n<p>Then Daniel mentioned something else.<\/p>\n<p>Six months earlier, a neighbor had called police after hearing screaming at the Dalton house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho answered the door?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdult female resident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she tell officers?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat everything was fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>There had been signs.<\/p>\n<p>Not obvious ones. Marcus had never insulted Chloe in front of me. He was too careful. Instead he corrected her stories, answered questions directed at her and joked that she was \u201csensitive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had disliked him.<\/p>\n<p>I had not understood him.<\/p>\n<p>At 2:17 that afternoon, Bennett returned carrying a tablet.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe had been admitted for observation. Her injuries were painful but not life-threatening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe obtained a preserved clip,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the living room?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShow me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re her mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is why I need to see it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned the screen.<\/p>\n<p>The timestamp read 11:48 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe stood beside the couch.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus faced her.<\/p>\n<p>Sylvia was several feet behind him.<\/p>\n<p>The audio cut in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou brought her here?\u201d Chloe demanded.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus pointed toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is my home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sylvia stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then a fourth person entered the frame.<\/p>\n<p>A woman in a dark dress carrying a wineglass.<\/p>\n<p>She looked comfortable.<\/p>\n<p>Too comfortable.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew he was married?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The woman barely reacted.<\/p>\n<p>She said Marcus had described Chloe as temporary.<\/p>\n<p>Bennett paused the video.<\/p>\n<p>My attention had moved from Chloe to the stranger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you seeing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bracelet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The woman wore a distinctive gold-and-black bracelet. I had seen it somewhere.<\/p>\n<p>I searched on my phone.<\/p>\n<p>Months earlier, I had followed reporting on a corporate fraud inquiry involving a network of consulting firms.
