him?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“His attorney network.”

Ortiz immediately sent agents to audit Elliot’s recent legal communications.

Protected privilege complicated everything.

But privilege does not cover criminal instructions.

They needed proof.

At 7:13, a drone camera caught movement behind the farmhouse.

Arden emerged alone.

He carried a metal case.

Walked toward a barn.

Michael Bell joined him.

Cross stayed inside.

“What is in the case?” Chloe asked.

“No idea.”

Then Arden dropped it.

The lid opened.

Stacks of files spilled into the mud.

Not cash.

Paper.

Old records.

Cross appeared and began shouting.

Even from distance, surveillance microphones caught fragments.

“…supposed to burn those…”

Arden answered:

“Not until she sees them.”

“Who?” I asked.

Then Cross shouted a name.

“Eleanor.”

Of course.

Arden had taken records specifically for me.

Not to protect himself.

Not only.

Something in him had changed after Adrian’s tape resurfaced.

Or guilt had finally grown expensive.

Ortiz gave the command.

Teams moved.

The farmhouse was surrounded.

Michael Bell ran.

Arden did not.

Cross fired one shot through a rear window.

Nobody was hit.

Agents returned commands, not fire.

She surrendered three minutes later.

Michael reached the tree line.

A dog team caught him within eight minutes.

The metal case was secured.

At 8:31, Ortiz opened the first file inside.

My old Hale case.

Original versions.

Not the altered versions preserved in official systems.

Edward’s handwritten notes.

Judith Cross’s approvals.

Thomas Bell’s payment schedules.

Martha’s internal communications.

And one memo addressed to Elliot Crane.

Dated six days before Thanksgiving.

SUBJECT: DALTON EXPOSURE.

Amelia Cross had written it.

Marcus had become unstable.

Chloe had accessed financial material.

Samuel might be alive.

Recommendation:

Remove Marcus from operational access.

Discredit Chloe.

Recover Ward archive.

And at the bottom:

If Eleanor Ward becomes active, escalate family-pressure protocol.

Chloe read the sentence over my shoulder.

“Family pressure.”

The same language from eleven years ago.

“What did Cross plan?” she asked.

Ortiz turned the page.

A photograph was clipped behind it.

My house.

Recent.

Another.

Daniel’s house.

Another.

Nina’s apartment.

Then one of Chloe leaving work.

Target circles had been drawn around each.

Cross had prepared leverage.

Not yet executed.

But prepared.

“What was the priority?” I asked.

Ortiz found the final page.

One line.

WARD FIRST.

I stared at it.

“Me.”

“No,” Chloe said.

She pointed.

Below it, in smaller handwriting:

Ward means the daughter.

Edward’s original coding.

My file had been E.W.

Chloe’s maiden name was Ward too.

The system had reused language.

Reused people.

Reused threats.

But this time, we had found the plan before they carried it out.

Then Arden asked to speak.

He refused everyone except me.

I went.

He sat handcuffed at a farmhouse table, breathing oxygen through a portable tube.

“Eleanor.”

“You tried to run Daniel and Chloe off the road.”

“Yes.”

“You helped bury Adrian.”

“Yes.”

“You worked for smiled.

“The tape Nina has proves Bell killed Adrian.”

“I know.”

“It also proves Samuel helped bury him.”

“I know.”

“And Judith gave the order.”

“I know.”

“Then you don’t know the worst part.”

I waited.

“Judith
