She would object to involving you, which is why I\u2019m doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>He had understood me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe someone inside Eleanor\u2019s office is feeding information to Edward Crane. I believe Thomas Bell is receiving money. I have not proved whether Martha Keene is involved voluntarily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Adrian said something that changed the timeline.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel Dalton has agreed to testify.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chloe whispered, \u201cBefore Adrian disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel is frightened for Marcus. Crane has made clear the boy is leverage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adrian described the two Phoenix archives.<\/p>\n<p>Transactions in one.<\/p>\n<p>Identities in the other.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am placing the master authentication records in a bank box that cannot be opened by any one person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>Authentication.<\/p>\n<p>That was what prosecutors would need.<\/p>\n<p>Not just copies.<\/p>\n<p>Proof connecting the copies to original records.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe key enclosed is one of two,\u201d Adrian said. \u201cSamuel has the other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Ortiz.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel had never mentioned it.<\/p>\n<p>Of course he had not.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth keys are required. The access phrase is something Eleanor will know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>Then Adrian laughed softly on the tape.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019ll hate that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chloe almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat phrase?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adrian continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk her what she told me after I said prosecutors only win because defendants make mistakes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Memory arrived intact.<\/p>\n<p>A hallway outside court.<\/p>\n<p>Adrian joking.<\/p>\n<p>Me exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>My answer:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. We win because eventually somebody keeps a record.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said it aloud.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds like you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately.<\/p>\n<p>The tape continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Samuel tells you he lost his key, he is lying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Useful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Thomas tells you the box is empty, he is lying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More useful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Martha tells you she never knew the box existed, believe her. I did not tell her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That mattered too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if I disappear, do not assume Victor Hale ordered it. Victor is dangerous, but Edward is afraid of people he cannot own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording ended.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then Chloe said, \u201cSamuel has the second key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to Adrian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe lied about the original recording.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe lied about at the hospital under guard.<\/p>\n<p>He denied possessing the key.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators played Adrian\u2019s tape.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Then he laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe always planned for betrayal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d Ortiz asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSafe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I was listening remotely.<\/p>\n<p>I said, \u201cSamuel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>But people reveal things when challenged confidently.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel stared at the camera.<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou came back because you needed the box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew Adrian had given Chloe the other key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More Washington.<\/p>\n<p>The safe-deposit agreement had been opened under a legal trust.<\/p>\n<p>Access required two keys, the phrase and identity verification through a sealed attorney protocol.<\/p>\n<p>By noon, prosecutors had a warrant.<\/p>\n<p>I went with Ortiz.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe came because the package had been addressed to her and the trust named her as secondary custodian.<\/p>\n<p>The bank manager looked as though he wished all of us had chosen another profession.<\/p>\n<p>Box 3147 was brought into a private room.<\/p>\n<p>Two keys.<\/p>\n<p>Two DALTON.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel had paid Bell three hundred thousand dollars shortly before Bell supposedly tried to shoot him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat makes no sense,\u201d Chloe said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnless the payment was for something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The purpose code:<\/p>\n<p>RETURN.<\/p>\n<p>Return what?<\/p>\n<p>Investigators confronted Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>He refused to answer.<\/p>\n<p>Then the master index revealed a linked note.<\/p>\n<p>RETURN A.C.
