him.

“Marcus?”

“You raised him.”

“For eighteen years.”

“That is not an answer.”

Samuel looked away.

“Yes.”

“Then why leave him with Sylvia?”

“Because Victor told me Edward’s people would kill Marcus if I surfaced.”

“Edward was still alive then?”

“For part of it.”

“And afterward?”

“Elliot inherited enough.”

“What does Elliot want?”

“The same thing Edward wanted.”

“Money?”

“Control.”

“Of what?”

“People who cannot admit how they became wealthy.”

That was larger than Marcus’s company.

Larger than Victor.

“Where is the real evidence?”

“The red ledger was part of it.”

“Burned.”

“Yes.”

“Adrian’s recording?”

“Still exists.”

“Where?”

Samuel looked directly at me.

“With Thomas Bell.”

I stared.

“You said Bell wanted the ledger.”

“He did.”

“Why would Adrian’s recording be with him?”

“Because Adrian gave it to Bell before he disappeared.”

“Then why did you claim you had the original?”

“To make you meet me.”

Anger rose cleanly.

“You used my daughter to manipulate me.”

“Yes.”

At least he did not insult me with denial.

“Why?”

“Because I needed federal protection.”

“You could have surrendered.”

“I did not know which federal people were safe.”

“So you chose me.”

“Adrian did.”

I became still.

“What?”

“His last instructions named you.”

“Why?”

“Because he believed you were the only Chloe.”

The old guilt moved again.

I pushed it aside.

“Where is Bell?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then we are finished.”

“Eleanor.”

I stood.

“He will contact Chloe.”

I stopped.

“Why?”

“Because Marcus told him about the flash drive.”

“When?”

“Before Thanksgiving.”

“How do you know?”

“Bell contacted me afterward.”

“What voice.

“There are two Phoenix archives.”

One on the flash drive.

One somewhere else.

“What is in the second?”

“The names that never appeared in the red ledger.”

“Why not?”

“Because Edward kept them separate.”

“Government officials?”

“Yes.”

“Corporate executives?”

“Yes.”

“Law controls it?”

“Bell had access.”

“Elliot?”

“Yes.”

“Victor?”

“Only portions.”

“Claire?”

“No.”

“Marcus?”

“No.”

“Why did Chloe’s drive entered.

“Eleanor.”

“What?”

“Chloe received another message.”

My stomach tightened.

“From Samuel’s number?”

“No.”

“Whose?”

“Unknown.”

She showed me the screen.

One sentence.

YOUR MOTHER IS WITH THE WRONG line.

ASK HER WHY SAMUEL NEVER TOLD HER WHO ADRIAN CALLED THE NIGHT HE DISAPPEARED.

I looked at Samuel.

His face had gone gray.

“Who did Adrian call?”

He did not answer.

“Samuel.”

He lowered his eyes.

“Your office.”

“I wasn’t there.”

“I know.”

“Who answered?”

Samuel looked through the glass toward the corridor.

“Thomas Bell.”

The dead analyst.

The missing
