remembered the day.

We had believed we were closing in on Victor.

Three weeks later, the case began collapsing.

One witness recanted.

Two companies disappeared.

Records arrived incomplete.

Thomas transferred departments.

Adrian vanished.

I had called those events setbacks.

Maybe they had been strategy.

My phone rang at 12:43.

Ortiz.

“We found Elliot.”

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Near the Vane property.”

“Did he surrender?”

“No. State police stopped him after he crossed the center line.”

“Ledger?”

“Not with him.”

“Did he say where it is?”

“He says he burned it.”

“That may be true.”

“He also says the list on his laptop was not his.”

That woke every part of me.

“Whose?”

“He claims someone placed it there.”

“Who?”

“He won’t say without an agreement.”

“Convenient.”

“Yes.”

“What about my name?”

“He says that is why he knows the list was planted.”

I stood slowly.

“Why?”

“Because according to Elliot, you were never part of the network.”

“That is generous.”

“He says your name had a different significance.”

“What significance?”

Ortiz paused.

“He says Edward Crane kept a separate list of people who had to be controlled.”

I did not speak.

“Controlled how?”

“Career pressure. compromised evidence. surveillance. intimidation.”

“And if that failed?”

Ortiz’s silence answered before her words did.

“Removal.”

Adrian Cole had vanished.

Samuel Dalton had supposedly died.

Thomas Bell had died in a car crash.

My case had collapsed.

“What happened to me?” I asked.

“According to Elliot?”

“Yes.”

“He says they did not need to remove you.”

“Why?”

“Because Edward Crane discovered something easier.”

“What?”

Ortiz’s voice was quiet.

“He found the one thing that would make you abandon the Hale investigation voluntarily.”

I looked toward the stairs where Chloe was sleeping.

My retirement had come earlier than I once planned.

I had left federal service after a family crisis.

After Chloe, then nineteen, was nearly killed in a highway collision caused by a driver who was never identified.

For years I had called it bad luck.

A hit-and-run.

An unsolved accident.

I gripped the kitchen counter.

“Ortiz.”

“Yes?”

“Ask Elliot what kind of car Edward drove eleven years ago.”

She understood immediately.

Twenty minutes later she called back.

Her answer was five words.

“A dark blue Lincoln sedan.”

I closed my eyes.

That was the car witnesses had seen leaving the road after Chloe’s crash.
