full-resolution image.

He examined it on his computer.

Then he stopped.

“Something’s wrong.”

“What?”

“The paper.”

Jessica looked at him.

“What about it?”

“Page three has a different watermark.”

Nobody spoke.

Daniel compared pages.

One, two, four and five carried the same manufacturer watermark.

Page three did not.

“Replacement sheet,” Jessica said.

“Yes.”

“But David’s initials are real.”

“Yes.”

I stared at the image.

“How do you replace a page while keeping real initials?”

Daniel looked at David.

“Did you ever initial blank pages?”

David immediately said, “No.”

Then his face changed.

“Oh.”

“What?”

“The signature packet.”

“What signature packet?”

“Stephen sometimes separated execution pages from full documents when closings were rushed.”

Jessica closed her eyes.

“You signed detached pages.”

“Sometimes.”

“Initialed them too?”

“Sometimes.”

She looked genuinely disgusted.

David did not argue.

“So Stephen had genuine initials on pages that weren’t attached to final language.”

“Yes.”

“That is malpractice waiting to become fraud.”

“Yes.”

Daniel inspected the sheet.

“There’s another clue.”

Near the staple holes, faint compression marks appeared.

The page had once been stapled differently from the rest.

A substituted sheet.

Real initials.

Different paper.

Ethan had told the truth.

At least about that.

Vega received the access logs.

The Juniper archive had been removed from its cabinet Thursday evening.

“By whom?”

She read.

“Benjamin Cross.”

Stephen’s associate.

“Why?”

“Legal review.”

“And then put into shredding?”

“Yesterday.”

David’s expression hardened.

“Stephen knew.”

“Knew what?”

“That Ethan had surfaced.”

Jessica shook her head.

“Or knew Mason’s archive had surfaced.”

That was worse.

Someone was still leaking.

Only a small group knew what we had found.

I looked around the room.

Jessica.

Daniel.

Vega.

David.

Ethan.

Laura, somewhere.

Federal investigators now.

And whoever had Mason’s tablet.

“Stephen keeps knowing what we know.”

Vega nodded.

“Yes.”

“Which means someone is telling him.”

“Or he has access we haven’t identified.”

Daniel’s computer chimed.

He had finished comparing Mason’s scan with the recovered him.

“How?”

“One sentence.”

He highlighted it.

Mason’s photographed version stated that the successor trustee assumed control upon a triggering event.

The recovered version added six words:

subject to consent of the Stabilizer.

My name did not appear.

But we knew the designation.

“That means Stephen couldn’t complete the transfer without me,” I said.

“Yes.”

“And the original document proves it.”

“Yes.”

“Why would he leave that requirement?”

Daniel searched the cross-references.

Jessica found the answer.

“Because without Claire’s consent, the trust might lose its separation from Mercer.”

“So he needed me legally.”

“Yes.”

“Not because I controlled Juniper.”

“No.”

“Because I made Juniper look independent.”

“Yes.”

There was Mason’s flaw.

Stephen could forge old records.

Move liabilities.

Replace pages.

Manipulate people.

But at the final consolidation, he needed a living, current, independently verifiable Claire Mercer.

I thought of his call.

Do not sign anything until we speak.

He did not merely want my signature.

He needed the right signature on the right version under circumstances a bank or trustee would accept.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at it.

Vega prepared the recorder.

I answered.

“Hello?”

Not Stephen.

Laura.

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

“Claire, don’t hang up.”

“Where are
