Stored with person least likely to open it.<\/p>\n<p>That sounded ridiculous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was least likely to open Mason\u2019s files?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel scrolled through contacts.<\/p>\n<p>His sister?<\/p>\n<p>His brother?<\/p>\n<p>His editor?<\/p>\n<p>Then I thought of the cat.<\/p>\n<p>Laura had taken Mason\u2019s cat to his sister.<\/p>\n<p>A domestic detail Mason might have trusted more than lawyers and banks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was the cat\u2019s name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one knew.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel searched.<\/p>\n<p>Mason mentioned the animal only once.<\/p>\n<p>Vet receipt.<\/p>\n<p>Cat: Walter.<\/p>\n<p>Owner: Mason Hale.<\/p>\n<p>His sister\u2019s name appeared as emergency contact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Right.<\/p>\n<p>Evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Process.<\/p>\n<p>Patience.<\/p>\n<p>Vega contacted Mason\u2019s sister.<\/p>\n<p>Her name was Emily Hale.<\/p>\n<p>She confirmed that Laura had brought Walter to her after Mason vanished.<\/p>\n<p>Then Vega asked an odd question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid your brother ever give you something and tell you not to open it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence on the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Then Emily answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heartbeat accelerated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA children\u2019s book.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was not what anyone expected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat book?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Wind in the Willows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would he tell you not to open it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said it wasn\u2019t for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was it for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA woman named Claire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did he give it to you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout three weeks before he disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he give a last name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you still have it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vega closed her eyes briefly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not touch it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily laughed nervously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has been on a shelf for seventeen months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeave it there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We drove to Emily\u2019s house with Vega.<\/p>\n<p>The book sat exactly where she said.<\/p>\n<p>Old hardcover.<\/p>\n<p>Green cloth.<\/p>\n<p>No obvious damage.<\/p>\n<p>A technician examined it.<\/p>\n<p>The spine had been hollowed.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a microSD card.<\/p>\n<p>Mason\u2019s safeguard.<\/p>\n<p>No bank.<\/p>\n<p>No cloud account.<\/p>\n<p>No corporate server.<\/p>\n<p>A children\u2019s book in his sister\u2019s house.<\/p>\n<p>The person least likely to open it.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel copied the card under controlled conditions.<\/p>\n<p>There were only four files.<\/p>\n<p>The missing Stephen Carrow recording.<\/p>\n<p>A spreadsheet.<\/p>\n<p>A letter.<\/p>\n<p>And a video.<\/p>\n<p>We opened the audio first.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen\u2019s voice was unmistakably calm.<\/p>\n<p>No raised voice.<\/p>\n<p>No threats.<\/p>\n<p>That made the words worse.<\/p>\n<p>A second voice, Gerald Knox, asked whether eight million in coverage was excessive.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen replied:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot if we need the system to survive the Stabilizer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Knox asked:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if she remains alive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stephen said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen the excess is irrelevant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach turned.<\/p>\n<p>Knox:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if she doesn\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stephen:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen the liquidity gives us options.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mason\u2019s voice entered from farther away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou people talk about death like an accounting event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A chair scraped.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything becomes an accounting event eventually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording ended.<\/p>\n<p>No murder plan.<\/p>\n<p>No order to harm me.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing prosecutors could point to and say intent.<\/p>\n<p>But Ethan had remembered correctly.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen Carrow had priced my death into Juniper.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica whispered, \u201cJesus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the waveform on the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Then Daniel opened the letter.<\/p>\n<p>Mason\u2019s first line read:<\/p>\n<p>Claire, if you found this, the box is already gone.<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Even dead or missing, Mason was ahead of us.<\/p>\n<p>The next line erased the impulse.<\/p>\n<p>Do not waste time proving Stephen is a bad man. Prove what he needs you alive for.<\/p>\n<p>I read it twice.<\/p>\n<p>Alive.<\/p>\n<p>Not dead.<\/p>\n<p>The insurance had made us focus on death.<\/p>\n<p>Mason wanted us to ask the opposite question.<\/p>\n<p>What did Stephen need from me while I was alive?<\/p>\n<p>The letter continued:<\/p>\n<p>Juniper\u2019s final transfer cannot occur without the Stabilizer becoming aware.
