firm\u2019s website listed him as managing partner.<\/p>\n<p>His office was less than two miles from us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not go there,\u201d Jessica said before I could speak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t going to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou looked like you were.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David said, \u201cI\u2019ll go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d three of us answered at once.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in days, I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Then Detective Vega called.<\/p>\n<p>They had processed David\u2019s house.<\/p>\n<p>No usable fingerprints around the safe beyond expected household prints.<\/p>\n<p>But there was a camera anomaly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe interior system recorded a nine-minute gap.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt shouldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemote access?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour security company is checking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould Ethan do it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLaura?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnknown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarrow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnknown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vega continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s something else. The safe wasn\u2019t forced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was opened with the correct combination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David went silent.<\/p>\n<p>I asked, \u201cWho knows it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward Sam.<\/p>\n<p>He was still sleeping.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you sure?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you ever enter it in front of anyone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEthan?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLaura?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYears ago, maybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Again, people did not need to steal secrets if David displayed them carelessly.<\/p>\n<p>Vega said, \u201cWe\u2019re checking the housekeeper and service personnel. Do not assume it was someone from the business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After she disconnected, David remained quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe safe combination changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the divorce filing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI moved personal documents into it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho changed it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe security company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho arranged the appointment?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEthan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every path returned to him.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica closed her eyes briefly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe either did everything or someone has spent years making sure it looks like he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s computer chimed.<\/p>\n<p>He had found an encrypted folder in Mason\u2019s archive.<\/p>\n<p>The folder name was simple.<\/p>\n<p>EP.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan Pike.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were only three files.<\/p>\n<p>Two were encrypted documents Daniel could not immediately open.<\/p>\n<p>The third was a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan stood beside Mason in a parking garage.<\/p>\n<p>They were shaking hands.<\/p>\n<p>The timestamp was twelve days before Mason disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Attached was one line from Mason:<\/p>\n<p>EP says he can prove who built the false authorization chain.
