safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost closed the door.<\/p>\n<p>Then Sam called from behind me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>I removed the latch.<\/p>\n<p>Sam ran toward him.<\/p>\n<p>David dropped to one knee and hugged him.<\/p>\n<p>Not the brief, distracted hug I had seen so many mornings.<\/p>\n<p>He held him.<\/p>\n<p>Sam looked over David\u2019s shoulder at me, confused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad, you\u2019re squishing me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David released him immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou smell weird.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s probably stress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s stress?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething adults pretend is a personality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sam laughed.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment, the room became normal.<\/p>\n<p>Then David saw the second lock I had placed on the door.<\/p>\n<p>Normal vanished.<\/p>\n<p>He helped Sam back into bed and waited until he fell asleep again.<\/p>\n<p>Then we stepped into the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEthan\u2019s gone,\u201d David said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice told us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey searched his office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe cleared personal files.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow recently?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSecurity footage shows him carrying boxes out Sunday night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before the custody hearing.<\/p>\n<p>Before Mason\u2019s files surfaced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew something was coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he know you filed against me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he encourage it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David looked ashamed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat you had manipulated the settlement. That the trust would make you look dishonest. That challenging custody could force a broader financial review.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA review that would expose Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t think that far.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You were angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEthan did think that far.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David\u2019s eyes lifted.<\/p>\n<p>We reached the same conclusion together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted discovery,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>David nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted the company records opened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe he wanted us to find something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr he wanted the records released somewhere he couldn\u2019t be blamed for releasing them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was worse.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan might not have been trying to hide.<\/p>\n<p>He might have been trying to expose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why threaten Sam?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe he didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The obvious-person warning again.<\/p>\n<p>My phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>A message from Detective Vega.<\/p>\n<p>Vehicle located. No occupant. Call me.<\/p>\n<p>I called.<\/p>\n<p>The gray Mercer sedan had been abandoned in a shopping center parking structure.<\/p>\n<p>No Ethan.<\/p>\n<p>No obvious evidence of violence.<\/p>\n<p>The tablet was gone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere was the car before that?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re pulling cameras.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you think he ran?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you think he\u2019s in danger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hated that word.<\/p>\n<p>After the call, David leaned against the hallway wall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s something I haven\u2019t told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course there is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEthan came to my house two nights before I told you I wanted the divorce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That caught me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was scared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf Richard?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wouldn\u2019t say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe gave me a key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSafe-deposit box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA bank downtown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you still have it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say was inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said if Juniper ever came apart, the box would explain who actually controlled the money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My anger rose so quickly I felt dizzy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had that key for months?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd never opened it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t mine to open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou forged my financial reality, signed documents you didn\u2019t read, hid a land scheme, concealed insurance on my life and tried to use our son as leverage, but a safe-deposit-box key triggered your ethical boundaries?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you say it like that\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow else would I say it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward our hotel door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEthan made me promise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou trusted him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you still?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David looked down the empty hallway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is the key?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe house you fought to own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held out my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTonight?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire, police told us not to\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet the key.
