Her car left a mountain road during bad weather.<\/p>\n<p>Police reported no evidence of another vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>No suspicious circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing dramatic.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing provable.<\/p>\n<p>I thought of Laura describing Mason\u2019s apartment.<\/p>\n<p>No broken door.<\/p>\n<p>No blood.<\/p>\n<p>Passport still there.<\/p>\n<p>Cat waiting.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes the absence of drama was its own kind of terror.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica closed her notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to stop speculating and start preserving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll archive everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou and Sam shouldn\u2019t be at the rental.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t get to decide where we live.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m serious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo am I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Richard knows you have Mason\u2019s files\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know that he does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLaura knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you think Laura tells Richard everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Laura tells somebody everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica stepped between us verbally before either could escalate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire will make her own decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen advise her to be careful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI already am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned back to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can put security at the rental.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then something occurred to him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is Sam tonight?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My entire body tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not ask me that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m his father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou used custody as leverage three days ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat cost you the right to suddenly act offended when I don\u2019t tell you where he sleeps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pain crossed his face.<\/p>\n<p>Good, a cruel part of me thought.<\/p>\n<p>Then I hated myself for thinking it.<\/p>\n<p>David lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI deserve that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was harder when he agreed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not trying to take him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot ever again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Promises from David had become documents I expected to inspect for hidden clauses.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s screen changed.<\/p>\n<p>He had found one more item linked to Patricia Sloan.<\/p>\n<p>A scanned notary journal entry.<\/p>\n<p>The journal listed the authorization supposedly signed by David and me.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did Mason get this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnknown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes it say Claire appeared?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIdentification?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel enlarged the entry.<\/p>\n<p>Driver\u2019s license numbers were recorded for both signers.<\/p>\n<p>David\u2019s was correct.<\/p>\n<p>Mine was not.<\/p>\n<p>I knew immediately because the last four digits were wrong.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose number is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel searched.<\/p>\n<p>Driver\u2019s license records were not publicly accessible.<\/p>\n<p>But Mason had written a note beside the number.<\/p>\n<p>CHECK LB OLD ID.<\/p>\n<p>Every eye turned toward Laura\u2019s initials.<\/p>\n<p>I felt the temperature of the room change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLaura?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David whispered.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel opened another file.<\/p>\n<p>A scanned copy of Laura Bennett\u2019s old Arizona driver\u2019s license.<\/p>\n<p>The final digits matched the number entered beside my name.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica stared at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Patricia\u2019s journal records Claire Mercer\u2019s name with Laura Bennett\u2019s identification number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought about Laura sitting across from me at the hotel.<\/p>\n<p>I brought proof.<\/p>\n<p>Mason\u2019s files.<\/p>\n<p>Her warnings.<\/p>\n<p>Her insistence that David had tried to protect me.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe every word had been true.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe truth itself was how she had gained my trust.<\/p>\n<p>David looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did not want him to be right.<\/p>\n<p>That did not matter.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel searched Mason\u2019s notes for the license number.<\/p>\n<p>One result appeared.<\/p>\n<p>A short entry dated four days before he vanished.<\/p>\n<p>LB says ID use was mistake. Claims EP instructed PS to enter CM name.
