He didn\u2019t care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the time, he believed his company would make anything I inherited look trivial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow I think he has forgotten about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked again at his settlement demand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire, I need to ask you something, and I need a completely candid answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you trying to trap your husband?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause what you\u2019re proposing could look like that if it\u2019s handled badly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not hiding his debts from him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want everything disclosed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery loan. The cars are value. The company is value. The properties are value. Fine. I\u2019m done convincing him otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd what do you consider valuable?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s one thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy independence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd not being financially chained to David for the next decade while we fight over a business he refuses to admit is unstable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica\u2019s face softened by a fraction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat,\u201d she said, \u201cis an answer I can work with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The forensic accountant confirmed the broad picture two weeks later.<\/p>\n<p>It was worse than I had estimated.<\/p>\n<p>The assets had considerable paper value, but David had leveraged them aggressively. Some loans were secured across multiple entities. Several guarantees connected his personal holdings to Mercer Development. He remembered how I took coffee. He drove forty minutes to bring me soup when I was sick. During the first years of our marriage, we built things together.<\/p>\n<p>Then success came.<\/p>\n<p>Not all at once.<\/p>\n<p>Enough of it, slowly enough, that I failed to notice when confidence hardened into certainty and certainty became contempt.<\/p>\n<p>By the time Sam was born, David had started describing our life as something he had created.<\/p>\n<p>His company.<\/p>\n<p>His house.<\/p>\n<p>His investments.<\/p>\n<p>His success.<\/p>\n<p>When something went wrong, however, responsibility suddenly became plural.<\/p>\n<p>Our expenses.<\/p>\n<p>Our taxes.<\/p>\n<p>Our problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know when it changed,\u201d I told Jessica. \u201cI only know that eventually I stopped correcting him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The settlement negotiations began the following month.<\/p>\n<p>David arrived at the first meeting with Mark Ellison and the relaxed confidence of a man expecting resistance he already knew how to defeat.<\/p>\n<p>He seemed almost disappointed when I did not provide it.<\/p>\n<p>Mark outlined David\u2019s demand.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica listened.<\/p>\n<p>When he finished, she said, \u201cMy client is prepared to consider a transfer of the requested assets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s eyebrows rose.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica continued before David could speak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSubject to complete disclosure and the assignment of all associated liabilities and obligations as permitted by law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David barely reacted.<\/p>\n<p>Mark did.<\/p>\n<p>His pen stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly are you proposing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica slid a draft across the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOwnership and responsibility travel together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David glanced at the first page, then pushed it toward Mark.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI expected that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, I watched Mark read.<\/p>\n<p>His pace slowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is extensive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo are the assets your client requested.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David leaned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs there a problem?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot necessarily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means I need to review the schedules.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark, we\u2019ve been through the numbers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot these provisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica\u2019s gaze met mine briefly.<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>The first warning.<\/p>\n<p>David ignored it.<\/p>\n<p>He began talking about the house instead.<\/p>\n<p>He wanted possession immediately after entry of the decree. He wanted the cars transferred without delay. He wanted control over the investment accounts assigned to him and complete ownership of Mercer Development.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica confirmed each request.<\/p>\n<p>Every time she did, David seemed more satisfied.<\/p>\n<p>Then we reached custody.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrimary physical custody to Claire,\u201d Mark said.<\/p>\n<p>David nodded.<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Mercer, we need a clear parenting schedule.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSam needs consistency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI agree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re requesting alternate weekends?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David looked irritated by the detail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy schedule is complicated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I watched him.<\/p>\n<p>He could spend forty minutes debating the transfer date of a sports car.<\/p>\n<p>He had spent less than four minutes discussing his son.<\/p>\n<p>Afterward, I locked myself in a courthouse bathroom stall and cried without making a sound.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica waited outside.<\/p>\n<p>When I emerged, she handed me a tissue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can still fight him on the property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can change your mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why do you look like you\u2019ve already decided?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next several weeks were consumed by disclosures.<\/p>\n<p>Boxes of records became electronic folders. Accountants traced loans. Attorneys revised schedules. Every liability was listed.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing was hidden.<\/p>\n<p>That mattered to me.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted David to have every opportunity to understand.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica insisted that his side acknowledge receipt of the disclosures.<\/p>\n<p>They did.<\/p>\n<p>Mark repeatedly requested clarification on certain guarantees.<\/p>\n<p>We provided it.<\/p>\n<p>At one meeting, Mark pointed directly to a schedule of company obligations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid, you need to review these personally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David waved him off.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why I hired you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m advising you to read them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know what I signed for the company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark\u2019s mouth tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David looked offended.<\/p>\n<p>I lowered my eyes before he could see what was in my face.<\/p>\n<p>The final draft took nearly two months.<\/p>\n<p>By then David had become impatient.<\/p>\n<p>He wanted the divorce finished.<\/p>\n<p>He had begun arriving in different cars, taking calls in hallways and checking his watch whenever anyone discussed details he considered beneath him.<\/p>\n<p>One afternoon, while Jessica and I waited for him to join a conference call, she asked, \u201cDo you think there\u2019s another woman?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes it matter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I considered it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What mattered was the urgency.<\/p>\n<p>David was rushing toward something.<\/p>\n<p>I could feel it.<\/p>\n<p>He wanted the marriage dissolved faster than simple unhappiness seemed to require.<\/p>\n<p>And he wanted control of Mercer Development with an intensity that made no sense if the company was as troubled as our records suggested.<\/p>\n<p>That bothered me.<\/p>\n<p>But I had no proof of anything beyond the debt.<\/p>\n<p>The final settlement agreement was thick enough that Sam joked it looked like one of his school dictionaries.<\/p>\n<p>He found it on my kitchen table the evening before the signing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs that about Dad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He traced one finger along the edge without opening it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you mad at him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Children ask enormous questions in very small voices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs he mad at you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid I do something?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I put down my mug.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut if I was better\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I moved to the chair beside him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is between your dad and me. You did not cause it. You cannot fix it. You do not have to choose which one of us to love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes filled anyway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you leaving?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to live somewhere else eventually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWill Dad come?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWill you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question nearly broke me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlways?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs long as you\u2019ll have me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He leaned into me, and I held him until his breathing settled.<\/p>\n<p>The following morning, David signed the agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Mark placed the document in front of him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRead the final version.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David flipped through it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve seen it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were revisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything major?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked toward Jessica.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe liability language is comprehensive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David gave a humorless laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve discussed that a dozen times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI still want you to read the addendum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David checked his phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have another meeting in forty minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen move it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That finally irritated him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His lawyer leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll right.
