enough.”

“Where are you?”

“You’ll get instructions.”

“What guarantee do I have?”

“The same one I’ve given for ten years.”

Daniel’s voice went cold.

“You mean keeping him alive because he was useful.”

Silence.

Then Pike said, “Smart.”

“Charles is dying.”

“That does complicate things.”

“So Leo isn’t useful anymore.”

“Not to Charles.”

“What does that mean?”

Pike ended the call.

Frank traced nothing useful.

Burner phone.

Signal bounced through relays.

But Leo had given us one key detail.

Janice was with him.

Why take Janice?

The ledger already came from her husband.

Pike did not need her unless she knew something else.

Daniel asked Frank.

“What does Janice have that we don’t?”

“Access?”

“To what?”

We thought.

Thomas’s bank box.

Boat.

Company.

House.

Then I remembered.

Bell Harbor Consulting.

The company still existed.

Janice was the legal successor.

Marisa had said it might hold old accounts.

“What if Pike needs her signature?”

“For what?”

“To move money.”

Frank called financial investigators.

Within twenty minutes, we had an answer.

Bell Harbor Consulting controlled one dormant offshore account tied to Rosemont.

Balance: nearly twelve million dollars.

Frozen years earlier due to inactivity but not investigated.

Access required two things.

Original corporate token.

And successor authorization.

“Janice,” Daniel said.

“Yes.”

“Does she have the token?”

Frank called her lawyer.

No one knew.

We searched Janice’s belongings left at the house.

Nothing.

Then Marisa remembered the bank box.

There had been a hard drive.

Not yet analyzed.

Forensics began reviewing it immediately.

The drive contained encrypted files.

One folder opened with a simple password.

SARAH.

Inside were scanned Rosemont records.

Another contained account credentials.

And a note from Thomas.

If Pike ever comes back, the token is where the first job ended.

“What first job?” I asked.

Janice’s first connection to all of this was Sarah’s hospital.

Thomas’s first surveillance job involving Sarah had begun at the clinic.

But his first job for Pike?

Charles might know.

Daniel called Vale.

“Can Charles speak?”

“Briefly.”

“Put him on.”

A minute later Charles’s weak voice came through.

“Daniel.”

“Where did Gordon Pike first assign Thomas Bell?”

Silence.

“Why?”

“Leo’s been taken.”

Charles’s breathing changed.

“By Pike?”

“Yes.”

“Answer me.”

“Rosemont.”

“What?”

“Thomas’s first private assignment for Pike was Rosemont’s old maternity center.”

“Where?”

Charles gave an address outside Boston.

The facility had closed twelve years ago.

Frank dispatched officers immediately.

No van.

No people.

But inside the abandoned building, they found evidence someone had been there recently.

Food wrappers.

Cigarette butts.

Vehicle tracks.

And on the second floor, a locked records room.

Inside was a wall safe.

Empty.

Except for one baseball card.

Daniel stared at the photograph an officer sent.

Leo’s.

On the back, in pencil:

NOT HERE LONG.

Our boy was leaving clues.

Frank called the officer.

“Anything else?”

A pause.

Then:

“Wait.”

They had found another card near the loading dock.

This one carried two words.

WATER SMELL.

Daniel looked at me.

“Harbor.”

“Could be anywhere.”

He shook his head.

“Not anywhere.”

Leo had spent three days in Portugal talking with Daniel about where he lived.

He knew Daniel lived near the sea.

He had asked questions about harbors.

But locally, one place had come up again and again in our investigation.

Portland.

Thomas’s boat.

Rosemont money.

Bell Harbor.

Frank frowned.

“Pike wouldn’t go back to the marina after we searched it.”

“No.”

Daniel stared at the card.

“But he might go somewhere Janice would recognize.”

Janice had lived in Maine.

Thomas had used Portland Harbor.

Bell Harbor Consulting.

“Bell Harbor,” I said.

Frank searched.

There was no town by that name nearby.

But there was Bell Harbor Marina.

Closed for the season.

Twenty-eight miles north of Portland.

Janice and Thomas had once rented storage there.

The records showed it.

Daniel was already moving.

Frank blocked him.

“You do not go ahead of us.”

“That’s my son.”

“And if you get killed walking in, he still needs one.”

The words stopped him.

Only for a second.

Then Daniel nodded.

“For once, fine.”

Police moved first.

But before they reached Bell Harbor Marina, Pike called again.

This time he gave us an address.

The same marina.

“Bring the ledger,” he said.

“Only Daniel.”

I grabbed the phone.

“No.”

Pike laughed.

“Mrs. Bennett.”

“You take me too.”

“Why?”

“Because Leo is my grandson.”

“So?”

“Because if you think Daniel will walk in there carrying your ledger while I stay home, you learned nothing from Sarah.”

Silence.

Then Pike said something I did not expect.

“She was like you.”

“No.”

“She was better.”

Another silence.

“Yes.”

For the first time, Gordon Pike sounded almost respectful.

“Fine,” he said. “Both of you.”

Frank shook his head violently.

Pike continued.

“No police within a mile or the boy moves again.”

The call ended.

Frank looked furious.

“You’re not doing this.”

Daniel picked up the ledger.

“Yes, we are.”

“No.”

“We’re giving him a copy.”

Frank stopped.

Daniel looked at Marisa.

“You said we photographed every page.”

“Yes.”

“Then the original doesn’t need to go.”

Frank understood.

A duplicate could buy time.

The real ledger stayed with federal investigators.

We prepared a copy.

Same cover.

Same page order.

Same stains recreated as closely as possible from scans.

Not perfect.

Enough from a distance.

Before we left, I went to Sarah’s room.

I stood beside her desk.

Ten years earlier, she had been eighteen and surrounded by people telling her she was too young to understand danger.

She had understood.

She had hidden with the false ledger in a bag, police units holding outside Pike’s demanded radius, and one hope stronger than fear.

Leo had been leaving us a path.

We only had to reach the
