Harlan had a financial relationship with an adoption intermediary and separately contracted Pike for an infant transfer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLikely Leo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at the paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Harlan sell my son?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know that he intended to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next page made the possibility harder to dismiss.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had copied a message from Pike.<\/p>\n<p>Client will pay premium if provenance remains sealed.<\/p>\n<p>I felt sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat client?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No name.<\/p>\n<p>Only initials.<\/p>\n<p>R.M.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is R.M.?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one knew.<\/p>\n<p>The amount beside the initials was $400,000.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was being bought for four hundred thousand dollars?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank read the accompanying note.<\/p>\n<p>Male infant. documents were now far beyond a family custody dispute.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at the list of dates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least eleven entries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleven babies?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrank.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know what it looks like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen say it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt looks like Harlan and Pike may have used vulnerable births to facilitate illegal placements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Leo was one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel lowered his head.<\/p>\n<p>I thought of Sarah refusing Harlan.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah recording conversations.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah insisting Leo remain visible.<\/p>\n<p>She had been eighteen.<\/p>\n<p>Surrounded by adults with money, authority, medical credentials and security access.<\/p>\n<p>And somehow she had recognized danger more clearly than almost anyone around her.<\/p>\n<p>The third envelope contained the answer to another question.<\/p>\n<p>WHO REALLY ORDERED THE TRANSFER.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a signed instruction from Harlan to Pike.<\/p>\n<p>No Charles.<\/p>\n<p>No Whitmore representative.<\/p>\n<p>Harlan had ordered Leo moved to Rosemont Medical.<\/p>\n<p>Pike had arranged transportation.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Bell was the first driver.<\/p>\n<p>After Evelyn stopped him, Robert Hale was pressured into becoming the second.<\/p>\n<p>Robert refused.<\/p>\n<p>That was why Leo returned upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at the signature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father didn\u2019t order it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe created the custody plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe paid Rosemont\u2019s archived corporate offices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPike?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill missing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCrane?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMissing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at the documents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey know we opened this box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank\u2019s phone buzzed again.<\/p>\n<p>This time he looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOfficer at your house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart jumped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA package arrived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No return address.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t open it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey haven\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We drove home immediately.<\/p>\n<p>The package sat inside a police evidence container on my porch.<\/p>\n<p>Bomb technicians cleared it.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a single old photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>Pregnant.<\/p>\n<p>Standing beside Robert Hale.<\/p>\n<p>Behind them, partly obscured by a car, was Gordon Pike.<\/p>\n<p>On the back was a handwritten message.<\/p>\n<p>THOMAS LIED ABOUT ROBERT\u2019S DEATH.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel read it twice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A second item lay beneath the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>A photocopy of Robert Hale\u2019s autopsy.<\/p>\n<p>One line had been highlighted.<\/p>\n<p>Estimated time of death: 3:00\u20135:00 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>Janice had told us Thomas left Robert alive shortly after midnight.<\/p>\n<p>There were at least three hours unaccounted for.<\/p>\n<p>Beneath the autopsy was another note.<\/p>\n<p>Ask Janice who went back.<\/p>\n<p>Every person on the porch turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>Janice went completely white.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel spoke first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho went back?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJanice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her lips trembled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told us he never returned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI lied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he wasn\u2019t alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was with him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Janice looked toward the street as if the answer might still be waiting there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGordon Pike.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened when they found Robert?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI swear I don\u2019t know what happened on the road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you know something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She began crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas came home at sunrise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had blood on his shirt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one moved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert\u2019s?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Thomas say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat everything had gone wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he say Robert was dead?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he say who killed him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Janice looked directly at Frank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said Pike made sure Robert would never talk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence swallowed the porch.<\/p>\n<p>Frank reached for his phone.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at the photograph of Pike standing behind Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>The man we had spent days treating as a corrupt security operator and blackmailer had just become something else.<\/p>\n<p>A possible murderer.<\/p>\n<p>And he was still free.<\/p>\n<p>Still watching Leo.<\/p>\n<p>Still sending messages.<\/p>\n<p>Still close enough to leave packages at our home.<\/p>\n<p>My phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>A new message.<\/p>\n<p>No photograph this time.<\/p>\n<p>Just an address and four words.<\/p>\n<p>COME WITHOUT POLICE.
