Mostly access systems, cameras, tracking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she work for Whitmore Strategic?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cContractor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan Vale identify her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank called.<\/p>\n<p>Vale recognized her immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa Crane.<\/p>\n<p>Former private investigator.<\/p>\n<p>Former Whitmore contractor.<\/p>\n<p>No current known employer.<\/p>\n<p>She had once worked directly under Gordon Pike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she do in this room?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Security footage showed lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Again, Charles\u2019s agreement left him nowhere to push.<\/p>\n<p>Frank bagged the note.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHospital security is checking every exit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s gone,\u201d Charles said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPike trained people to leave before anyone realized they should look.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We returned home under escort.<\/p>\n<p>Leo met us in the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>He hugged me injury.<\/p>\n<p>Frank sent the identification immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Then I showed Leo the elevator image of Melissa Crane.<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFollow you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt sick.<\/p>\n<p>Pike\u2019s people had not merely photographed Leo.<\/p>\n<p>They had approached him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they want?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Frank answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRoutine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince he was three.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah did too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNever mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe stayed at a cheap hotel near Cape Cod.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore I knew she was pregnant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe stole every blanket.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Then his expression
