Security. He reports to Charles, but lately he\u2019s spending more time with Harlan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>We played it twice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarlan had his own relationship with Pike,\u201d Marisa said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt separates him from direct Whitmore instructions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recording seven contained Sarah alone.<\/p>\n<p>She sounded frightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert says Gordon followed him tonight. I\u2019m hiding this somewhere Mom won\u2019t accidentally throw it away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward Sarah\u2019s desk upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>She had known me well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says Harlan wants the baby moved before Daniel can get back. Robert thinks Charles changed his mind, but Harlan doesn\u2019t care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf anyone hears this later, I want it clear: Daniel did not abandon me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His head dropped.<\/p>\n<p>Leo had been right upstairs the night before.<\/p>\n<p>If his father thought he had died, maybe he was sad too.<\/p>\n<p>Now Sarah herself was defending him from the future.<\/p>\n<p>The recording ended.<\/p>\n<p>No one spoke for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>File eight was damaged.<\/p>\n<p>File nine contained nothing relevant.<\/p>\n<p>File ten was recorded in what sounded like a car.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah and Robert spoke quietly.<\/p>\n<p>Robert told her he had copied payment records.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarlan\u2019s scared,\u201d Robert said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf Charles?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Of Gordon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah asked why.<\/p>\n<p>Robert answered, \u201cBecause Gordon knows what Harlan asked him to do if the transfer fails.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The audio distorted.<\/p>\n<p>We lost several seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Then Sarah:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert\u2019s reply was partially missing.<\/p>\n<p>We could make out only:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026make sure no one can prove\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then static.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026baby\u2019s records\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank rewound.<\/p>\n<p>The damaged section refused to give us more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan audio specialists recover it?\u201d Daniel asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marisa looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>He caught himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine. Maybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recording eleven changed everything.<\/p>\n<p>It began with a door closing.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy are you here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harlan answered.<\/p>\n<p>We all recognized him from archived interviews police had found.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo discuss your delivery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not discussing anything without Dr. Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is unavailable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert said you made him unavailable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Harlan:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve been listening to people who don\u2019t understand the situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand you changed my file.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harlan:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are under stress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Not happily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hands shook.<\/p>\n<p>The manipulation was audible.<\/p>\n<p>Not imagined.<\/p>\n<p>Not reconstructed.<\/p>\n<p>Alive.<\/p>\n<p>Harlan continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour blood pressure is dangerous. You need to think about the baby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am thinking about him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen allow us to make arrangements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUs?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, you don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then Sarah said the name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGordon Pike told Robert you want Leo moved tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel leaned forward so abruptly his chair scraped.<\/p>\n<p>Harlan\u2019s voice sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not say that name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no idea who you\u2019re involving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Gordon working for Charles or for you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harlan did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah pressed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCharles called it off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Harlan said, \u201cCharles changes his mind when guilt becomes inconvenient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you\u2019re ignoring him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m protecting everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was again.<\/p>\n<p>The phrase people used just before deciding someone else\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah\u2019s voice became colder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy taking my baby?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy preventing a public disaster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose disaster?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harlan did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Then footsteps.<\/p>\n<p>The recording shifted.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah said, \u201cGet out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harlan:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah, listen to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t understand what Gordon will do if this collapses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room froze.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat will he do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harlan lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe will erase the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one breathed.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah asked, \u201cWhat problem?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another long pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then Harlan said, \u201cMe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was not the answer we expected.<\/p>\n<p>Frank rewound it.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe feared Pike,\u201d Daniel said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d Marisa answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarlan believed Pike would kill him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr expose him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cErase sounds stronger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recording twelve came from later that night.<\/p>\n<p>Hospital sounds.<\/p>\n<p>Wheels.<\/p>\n<p>Distant voices.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah whispered into the recorder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m keeping this in my bag. Evelyn knows I have it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I\u2019m wrong, Mom will laugh at me for years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I covered my mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I\u2019m right, then somebody needs to know Harlan is afraid of Gordon Pike. Robert says Pike has copies too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Copies.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Everybody had copies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCharles thinks he can control Gordon. He can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah had understood more than Charles.<\/p>\n<p>More than any of them.<\/p>\n<p>The recording ended with a nurse entering.<\/p>\n<p>File thirteen was shorter.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah sounded breathless.<\/p>\n<p>In pain.<\/p>\n<p>Harlan\u2019s voice appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Then Evelyn\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Instructions.<\/p>\n<p>Monitor alarms.<\/p>\n<p>The beginning of labor.<\/p>\n<p>We listened carefully.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing obviously incriminating.<\/p>\n<p>Then Harlan said, \u201cIncrease the infusion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn responded, \u201cThat\u2019s not Mercer\u2019s protocol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harlan answered, \u201cMercer isn\u2019t here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s already bleeding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harlan:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn refused.<\/p>\n<p>Another nurse apparently complied.<\/p>\n<p>Janice.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice, younger but recognizable, said, \u201cDoctor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harlan repeated the order.<\/p>\n<p>The recording became chaotic.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah cried out.<\/p>\n<p>I almost stopped it.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel reached toward the device.<\/p>\n<p>Then Sarah spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the moment Evelyn had described.<\/p>\n<p>My grandson hearing his own name from his mother before she slipped away.<\/p>\n<p>Leo was not in the room with us.<\/p>\n<p>I was grateful.<\/p>\n<p>The recording ended abruptly.<\/p>\n<p>We sat in silence for several minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Then Frank selected file fourteen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The timestamp was later.<\/p>\n<p>After Sarah lost consciousness.<\/p>\n<p>No one knew the recorder was still running.<\/p>\n<p>At first there was only muffled sound from inside her bag.<\/p>\n<p>Footsteps.<\/p>\n<p>Doors.<\/p>\n<p>Distant voices.<\/p>\n<p>Then Harlan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is the child?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A man answered.<\/p>\n<p>Not Cross.<\/p>\n<p>Not Robert.<\/p>\n<p>Not Charles.<\/p>\n<p>We did not recognize him.<\/p>\n<p>Frank increased the volume.<\/p>\n<p>Harlan:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou weren\u2019t supposed to be here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The man replied, \u201cPlans changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGordon\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s head snapped up.<\/p>\n<p>Gordon Pike.<\/p>\n<p>His voice existed on the recording.<\/p>\n<p>We finally had him.<\/p>\n<p>Harlan sounded frightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCharles called it off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t work for Charles tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one moved.<\/p>\n<p>Harlan:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike laughed quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marisa\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>There.<\/p>\n<p>The entire assumption cracked.<\/p>\n<p>Pike had not merely been carrying orders.<\/p>\n<p>He had begun operating independently.<\/p>\n<p>Harlan:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich ones?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t have them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen the boy leaves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harlan:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was never the arrangement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither was your little side business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel whispered, \u201cBlackmail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank nodded.<\/p>\n<p>The recording continued.<\/p>\n<p>Harlan accused Pike of selling information.<\/p>\n<p>Pike accused Harlan of billing Charles for work he never completed.<\/p>\n<p>Two corrupt men revealing each other.<\/p>\n<p>Then footsteps approached.<\/p>\n<p>Another voice.<\/p>\n<p>Cross.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you doing here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike stopped speaking.<\/p>\n<p>Cross said, \u201cSarah\u2019s crashing. Harlan, they need you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Movement.<\/p>\n<p>A door slammed.<\/p>\n<p>The recording went muffled again.<\/p>\n<p>Then nothing for several minutes.<\/p>\n<p>We thought it was over.<\/p>\n<p>Frank was about to stop playback when a final sound emerged.<\/p>\n<p>A door opening.<\/p>\n<p>Slow footsteps.<\/p>\n<p>Someone entered Sarah\u2019s room after the others left.<\/p>\n<p>We heard fabric move.<\/p>\n<p>A drawer.<\/p>\n<p>Then a voice.<\/p>\n<p>Very quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel turned pale.<\/p>\n<p>He knew it.<\/p>\n<p>I knew it too after a second.<\/p>\n<p>Charles.<\/p>\n<p>He had been there.<\/p>\n<p>Not merely in the corridor.<\/p>\n<p>Inside her room.<\/p>\n<p>Charles whispered something else.<\/p>\n<p>The audio was faint.<\/p>\n<p>Frank amplified it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI stopped it too late.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A chair moved.<\/p>\n<p>For almost a minute, Charles said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then footsteps approached from outside.<\/p>\n<p>He stood.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving, he spoke one final sentence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the boy survives, keep him away from all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording ended.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>His father had lied again.<\/p>\n<p>Charles had told us he argued with Sarah before delivery and left.<\/p>\n<p>He had told Daniel he did not know whether Leo survived.<\/p>\n<p>But Sarah\u2019s recorder placed him in her room after the transfer attempt had failed and while Leo was still alive somewhere inside that hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe he had not seen the baby.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe he did not know the truth.<\/p>\n<p>But he had known survival was possible.<\/p>\n<p>And he had already decided what should happen next.<\/p>\n<p>Not find Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Not protect Sarah\u2019s wishes through law.<\/p>\n<p>Hide Leo.<\/p>\n<p>From the Whitmores.<\/p>\n<p>From Harlan.<\/p>\n<p>From Pike.<\/p>\n<p>From everyone.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis ends today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marisa looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe part where every person decides what truth I\u2019m allowed to have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He picked up his phone.<\/p>\n<p>This time, when he called Charles, he did not ask permission to come.<\/p>\n<p>He told him he was on his way.<\/p>\n<p>And he was bringing Sarah\u2019s voice with him.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/feeleverystory.online\/?p=13702\">Click here to continue reading: PART 17: Daniel Played Sarah\u2019s Final Recording for Charles, and His Father\u2019s Answer Revealed Why Gordon Pike Had Been Impossible to Control<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Forensics recovered the files in less than twenty-four hours.
