was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cShe knew him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I thought of the woman in Maine.<\/p>\n<p>Her fear.<\/p>\n<p>The old photograph in her mailbox.<\/p>\n<p>Her claim that silence bought time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if the threat was real?\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why the company?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe it has nothing to do with her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank had already called an analyst.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe find ownership before accusing anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel sat again reluctantly.<\/p>\n<p>Charles watched us through kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>He saw Charles on screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs that him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Charles did not speak.<\/p>\n<p>Leo approached cautiously.<\/p>\n<p>The old man him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou look sick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you dying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel inhaled sharply.<\/p>\n<p>Charles answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow soon?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoctors aren\u2019t certain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you scared?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles seemed unprepared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer changed something in Leo\u2019s face.<\/p>\n<p>Not affection.<\/p>\n<p>Recognition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did bad looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles opened his mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Closed it.<\/p>\n<p>Finally he said, \u201cBecause I thought being able to control something meant I had the right to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s stupid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel lowered his head to hide a smile.<\/p>\n<p>Charles surprised us by laughing.<\/p>\n<p>Weakly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo looked at him another moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know if I want to meet you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut maybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles\u2019s eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is more than I deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t say it was for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he walked away.<\/p>\n<p>Charles stared after him through a screen that showed only the kitchen wall.<\/p>\n<p>When he spoke again, his voice had changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not let him become me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at him for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI Bell.<\/p>\n<p>Janice had never mentioned him.<\/p>\n<p>According to public records, Thomas had died six years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at Frank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he
