Could be intentional. Could be accidental.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould someone have done it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I watched Leo through the doorway.<\/p>\n<p>He sat with Janice and Evelyn in the living room, comparing their memories of Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>Janice had cried when she first saw him.<\/p>\n<p>Not dramatically.<\/p>\n<p>She simply covered her mouth and stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have her smile,\u201d she told him.<\/p>\n<p>Leo had heard that from me his entire life.<\/p>\n<p>This time he seemed to believe it differently.<\/p>\n<p>Marisa arrived shortly after Frank.<\/p>\n<p>She had spent the afternoon obtaining copies of Charles\u2019s affidavit and preparing a motion to stop Whitmore Strategic Protection from approaching Leo.<\/p>\n<p>When she learned about Harlan, she closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery witness we locate is either frightened, shot or dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot suspicious at all,\u201d Daniel said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuspicious isn\u2019t evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou and Frank definitely have a club.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have jackets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank ignored them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarlan\u2019s death creates another problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf he was responsible for the false records, he can\u2019t confess now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at Robert\u2019s note.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we find Hale\u2019s copies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helen Hale still would not answer calls.<\/p>\n<p>Frank arranged for Vermont police to visit her.<\/p>\n<p>She was gone.<\/p>\n<p>Her car remained at home.<\/p>\n<p>No sign of forced entry.<\/p>\n<p>A neighbor reported seeing Helen leave that morning with a suitcase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRunning?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop saying maybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank gave me a tired look.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen stop asking questions whose answers we don\u2019t have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fair.<\/p>\n<p>At eleven, Charles called Daniel from the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel put him on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou heard about Harlan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did not kill him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t ask.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were going to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I was going to ask why you kept a doctor you knew was corrupt anywhere near Sarah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles was silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is harder to answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believed corruption could be controlled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat may be the most honest thing you\u2019ve ever said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles coughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you have spent your life buying obedience, you begin to confuse obedience with loyalty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hated how reasonable he could sound now.<\/p>\n<p>A dying man\u2019s clarity did not erase the damage done by the healthy one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know Harlan planned to falsify Leo\u2019s death?\u201d Daniel asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know he took Leo to the basement?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you order Robert to transport him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI ordered Robert to be available for Sarah if she needed transportation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at Janice.<\/p>\n<p>She nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Charles continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI changed my mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah came to see me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe morning before she went into labor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel sat straighter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe came to you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me something I had not expected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat if I took her child, I would lose you permanently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew that already.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat changed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe showed me your letters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat letters?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ones I believed she had ignored.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Charles had intercepted communication in both directions so thoroughly that even he eventually believed parts of his own construction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert gave them to her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd she showed you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI realized Harlan had been manipulating information beyond what I authorized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYet you left him in place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor one day too long.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bitterness in Charles\u2019s voice sounded genuine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told Harlan everything was over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe ignored you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe he was protecting himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marisa leaned toward the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Whitmore, what leverage did Dr. Harlan have over you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles recognized her voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCounsel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnswer the question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had paid him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInformation about Sarah\u2019s medical status.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Illegal access.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo prepare psychiatric documentation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fabricated documentation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo facilitate custody if necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou paid him to steal my child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would you call it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told myself I was protecting the family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were protecting your control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The admission stopped Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Charles continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I withdrew, Harlan was exposed. If Sarah complained, if Robert released what he had, Harlan could lose his license and possibly face prosecution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo he falsified Leo\u2019s death to cover the transfer plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is what I believe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy tell me now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles coughed again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Harlan is dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat makes you generous?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice weakened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt makes me afraid someone else is cleaning the record.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank looked sharply at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVale?\u201d Daniel asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCross?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone in Whitmore security?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles did not answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank wrote something.<\/p>\n<p>Charles continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was one man Harlan trusted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cName?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI only knew him as Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>Her face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Mercer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles heard her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah\u2019s obstetrician.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The doctor who had supposedly been unavailable when she went into labor.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel gripped the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said Harlan replaced Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere was Mercer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank began searching.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Alan Mercer had retired four years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>He lived in Florida.<\/p>\n<p>Alive.<\/p>\n<p>At least according to public records.<\/p>\n<p>Marisa immediately started arranging contact.<\/p>\n<p>Charles\u2019s voice came through the phone again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to meet Leo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I expected an argument.<\/p>\n<p>Charles simply said, \u201cI understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo had entered the kitchen unnoticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone turned.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel covered the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wants to meet me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo I get to decide?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question landed directly against the rule Daniel had established in Portugal.<\/p>\n<p>If it was safe, the choice would be Leo\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked trapped by his own promise.<\/p>\n<p>Marisa intervened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot while Charles is hospitalized and under investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo later?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you want to?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to see what he\u2019s like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t the same as wanting him in your life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles had heard everything.<\/p>\n<p>His voice came quietly from the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is more than fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo approached the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you Charles?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m Leo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A long silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told Dad I died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles inhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI allowed him to believe a lie I helped make possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds like lawyer talking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marisa\u2019s mouth twitched.<\/p>\n<p>Charles surprised us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes. It does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know I was alive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you lying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo looked at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do we know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles said, \u201cYou shouldn\u2019t believe me because I ask you to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo considered that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he walked away.<\/p>\n<p>Charles whispered, \u201cHe sounds like Sarah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel ended the call without responding.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, police returned to Harlan\u2019s study after finding something overlooked during the first search.<\/p>\n<p>A small brass key had been taped beneath a drawer.<\/p>\n<p>Attached was a paper tag.<\/p>\n<p>On one side was a storage-unit number.<\/p>\n<p>On the other, handwritten in black ink, was one word.<\/p>\n<p>SARAH.<\/p>\n<p>Frank called us from the property.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe storage company is in Vermont.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNear Robert?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty-three miles from his old house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marisa obtained an emergency preservation order while police contacted the storage company.<\/p>\n<p>The unit had been rented for eleven years.<\/p>\n<p>Not in Harlan\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>Not Robert\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>The account belonged to a shell company that once received payments from a Whitmore subsidiary.<\/p>\n<p>Charles denied knowing it existed.<\/p>\n<p>By afternoon, police opened the unit.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were three filing cabinets, two boxes of medical records, an old computer and a locked metal case.<\/p>\n<p>One box contained copies of Sarah\u2019s chart.<\/p>\n<p>The missing portions.<\/p>\n<p>The original medication orders.<\/p>\n<p>The false neonatal records.<\/p>\n<p>Everything.<\/p>\n<p>But the metal case held something else.<\/p>\n<p>Letters.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of them.<\/p>\n<p>From Robert Hale.<\/p>\n<p>Most addressed to Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Never delivered.<\/p>\n<p>One envelope was addressed to me.<\/p>\n<p>Frank brought it to the house after investigators cleared it.<\/p>\n<p>The handwriting was unfamiliar.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Robert began with an apology.<\/p>\n<p>Then he wrote that if I was reading the letter, he had probably failed to keep his promise to Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>He described the false records.<\/p>\n<p>Harlan\u2019s attempted transfer.<\/p>\n<p>Charles\u2019s withdrawal.<\/p>\n<p>And one fact none of us had known.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Mercer had not been unavailable the night Sarah went into labor.<\/p>\n<p>He had been deliberately sent away after receiving a false emergency call about another patient.<\/p>\n<p>Harlan arranged it.<\/p>\n<p>Robert believed Harlan wanted sole control of Sarah\u2019s delivery.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom, Robert wrote one final instruction.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to know whether Sarah\u2019s death was unavoidable, find Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>He knows what Harlan changed.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>The question we had tried not to ask was no longer avoidable.<\/p>\n<p>Leo had survived a plan to erase him on paper.<\/p>\n<p>But Sarah might have died because the same man needed her doctor out of the way.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/feeleverystory.online\/?p=13697\">Click here to continue reading: PART 12: Sarah\u2019s Real Doctor Finally Explained What Harlan Changed During Labor, and the Truth Forced Daniel to Reconsider Who His Father Had Been<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Peter Harlan died in his study.
