Noah. Leo. Caleb.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He made a face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCaleb?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother liked Caleb.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m glad she changed her mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room softened for one precious moment.<\/p>\n<p>Then we reached the pages about Charles.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah had recorded dates when she believed she was followed.<\/p>\n<p>Descriptions of vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Names of people who approached her.<\/p>\n<p>A copy of a license plate.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn recognized it as belonging to a car then used by Whitmore Strategic Protection.<\/p>\n<p>Marisa photographed that page separately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is contemporaneous documentation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeaning?\u201d Leo asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means your mom wrote things down when they were happening, not years later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo people believe it more?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom was smart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>The later pages became more troubling.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah had written that someone accessed her medical file without permission.<\/p>\n<p>She knew because a nurse mentioned a test result Sarah had never discussed with that nurse, and because Daniel\u2019s father somehow knew details of her pregnancy before she told Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Then Dr. Peter Harlan entered the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah described him as polite.<\/p>\n<p>Too polite.<\/p>\n<p>A man who spoke to her as if the decisions about her body had already been made elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>She wrote that Harlan encouraged a particular delivery plan despite her regular obstetrician recommending something different.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn read over my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah wanted Dr. Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was Mercer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer obstetrician.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere was he the night she delivered?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnavailable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marisa made a note.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe find him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel turned another page.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah had written about Robert Hale.<\/p>\n<p>He had warned her that Charles was pressuring hospital administrators.<\/p>\n<p>He believed Charles wanted control over the birth records.<\/p>\n<p>Not to harm Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>To control what happened to the baby afterward.<\/p>\n<p>That distinction mattered.<\/p>\n<p>For several pages, the notebook pointed toward custody manipulation, identity concealment and falsified records.<\/p>\n<p>Then we reached one sentence that changed the room.<\/p>\n<p>Robert says Harlan owes Charles too much money to say no.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Harlan owe him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marisa answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould be financial. Could be professional. We don\u2019t assume.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo had become very quiet.<\/p>\n<p>I closed the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s enough for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd some of it is adult legal information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou always say that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause some information belongs with adults until we understand it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody had secrets ten years ago too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went silent.<\/p>\n<p>Leo looked at each of us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why everything got messed up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one could argue.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled out a chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI won\u2019t lie to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I will sometimes tell you that something isn\u2019t appropriate yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat still sounds like hiding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes protecting and hiding look similar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do I know which one it is?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question was too good.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou watch whether I keep my promise to tell you later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He considered that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I reopened the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>We skipped details about Sarah\u2019s complications and focused on what concerned Leo\u2019s identity.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah had believed Charles intended to have Daniel declared emotionally unstable if he resisted the family.<\/p>\n<p>She also feared he would portray her as unfit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d Daniel asked.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn pointed to a line.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMedication.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah wrote that Harlan had repeatedly asked whether she suffered depression, panic attacks or substance abuse.<\/p>\n<p>She had denied all three.<\/p>\n<p>Yet one hospital form listed \u201chistory of anxiety and poor compliance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat wasn\u2019t Sarah,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Evelyn agreed.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was building a record.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marisa nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor court?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo stared at the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandpa Charles wanted to take me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one liked the word grandpa.<\/p>\n<p>But biologically, it was true.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he wanted the ability to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he thought having control was the same as caring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t make sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The notebook continued.<\/p>\n<p>Three days before Sarah gave birth, Robert Hale wrote her a note saying he had obtained copies of emails between Charles and Dr. Harlan.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah transcribed one line.<\/p>\n<p>Need the birth handled without complications afterward.<\/p>\n<p>Marisa sat straighter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat wording matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould mean anything,\u201d Frank said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly. Which is why context matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel rubbed his forehead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout complications afterward could mean no custody fight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hated the caution again.<\/p>\n<p>But it was necessary.<\/p>\n<p>We turned the page.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Not blank.<\/p>\n<p>Cut.<\/p>\n<p>Several pages had been removed with a blade close to the binding.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel ran his thumb near the edge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank counted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least six.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The notebook continued after the missing section.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah\u2019s handwriting had changed.<\/p>\n<p>The letters were smaller.<\/p>\n<p>More compressed.<\/p>\n<p>She wrote that Robert had disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>She could no longer reach him.<\/p>\n<p>Charles knew something had been taken.<\/p>\n<p>She believed time was running out.<\/p>\n<p>Then another line.<\/p>\n<p>If Robert fails, Evelyn has the letter for Mom.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe planned this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe planned all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marisa looked at the missing pages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhoever mailed this notebook removed the most important section.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe Sarah removed them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. She says later that the evidence is in here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed to another entry.<\/p>\n<p>If Daniel gets the notebook intact, he\u2019ll know what happened.<\/p>\n<p>Intact.<\/p>\n<p>The word was underlined.<\/p>\n<p>Our notebook was not intact.<\/p>\n<p>Leo noticed too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomebody took the proof.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe,\u201d Marisa said.<\/p>\n<p>He looked frustrated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou say maybe a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a lawyer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds annoying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Marisa almost did.<\/p>\n<p>Then her phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>She stepped into the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>When she returned, her expression had changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe court moved tomorrow\u2019s hearing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo when?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCharles\u2019s attorneys claim immediate concern for Leo\u2019s welfare because Daniel recently entered the home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m his father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that\u2019s dangerous?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re implying instability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course they are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marisa packed her laptop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have less than three hours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens to Leo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe stays with a trusted adult.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo crossed his arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause this hearing is about you, not for you,\u201d Marisa said.<\/p>\n<p>He looked ready to argue.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel crouched in front of him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemember when you asked if I\u2019d still be here today?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need you to trust me for a few hours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I\u2019m going to tell a judge that I do not want anyone taking you away from your home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo looked at him carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the answer Leo needed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn stayed with him.<\/p>\n<p>Frank drove us to court.<\/p>\n<p>Charles Whitmore was already there.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized him before anyone pointed him out.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had his height.<\/p>\n<p>Leo had the shape of his brow.<\/p>\n<p>Charles stood beside Martin Vale near the courtroom doors, thinner than I expected, one hand resting on a polished cane.<\/p>\n<p>He was pale.<\/p>\n<p>Illness had hollowed his cheeks but had not softened his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at Daniel first.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing moved in his face.<\/p>\n<p>Then he looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Bennett.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t get to speak to me as if we\u2019re acquaintances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His mouth tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stepped between us.<\/p>\n<p>Charles studied his son.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou look older.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou look exactly the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was not physically true.<\/p>\n<p>Charles understood the meaning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI came because of my grandson.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis name is Leo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know his name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen use it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles leaned slightly on the cane.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was told he died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel laughed once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou arranged the records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word was immediate.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, Daniel looked uncertain.<\/p>\n<p>Charles continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI arranged many things. That was not one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did not know the child survived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou expect me to believe that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I expect eventually to prove it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin Vale touched Charles\u2019s arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should go inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think I killed your daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t say that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t have to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would you even mention it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles stared at Evelyn\u2019s copied folder in my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause someone has been showing you incomplete documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen complete them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A strange expression passed over his face.<\/p>\n<p>Fear.<\/p>\n<p>Not anger.<\/p>\n<p>Not calculation.<\/p>\n<p>Fear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe missing pages from Sarah\u2019s notebook,\u201d I said. \u201cDo you have them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His gaze sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat notebook?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer was too quick.<\/p>\n<p>Marisa noticed.<\/p>\n<p>So did Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Before anyone could press him, the courtroom doors opened.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, Charles\u2019s attorneys argued that Leo had been raised under false information, that his paternal family had been denied knowledge of his existence, and that international travel with a newly discovered biological father created concern.<\/p>\n<p>Then Daniel stood.<\/p>\n<p>He did not attack Charles.<\/p>\n<p>He did not tell the entire story.<\/p>\n<p>He simply said that Leo\u2019s home was with me, that he had no intention of removing him, and that any relationship between them should develop gradually under conditions Leo found safe.<\/p>\n<p>The judge listened.<\/p>\n<p>Then Marisa submitted the threatening messages and evidence connecting the surveillance vehicle to Whitmore Strategic Protection.<\/p>\n<p>Charles\u2019s lawyers objected.<\/p>\n<p>The judge\u2019s expression hardened anyway.<\/p>\n<p>The emergency petition was denied.<\/p>\n<p>Not permanently.<\/p>\n<p>But enough.<\/p>\n<p>Leo was coming home with me.<\/p>\n<p>Outside the courtroom, I expected Charles to leave.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he approached Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to speak with you alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you have Sarah\u2019s notebook, your situation is more dangerous than you understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles looked around the courthouse corridor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Robert Hale did not steal evidence from me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom Peter Harlan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Harlan care about a notebook ten years later?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles gripped his cane.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Harlan is the one who believed Sarah\u2019s baby had to disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does disappear mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles looked at him for several seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cThat is the question you should have asked ten years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before Daniel could answer, Charles\u2019s body swayed.<\/p>\n<p>The cane slipped.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel caught him by reflex.<\/p>\n<p>For one startling second father and son held each other upright.<\/p>\n<p>Charles whispered something only Daniel heard.<\/p>\n<p>Then his knees gave way.<\/p>\n<p>People shouted for help.<\/p>\n<p>An ambulance was called.<\/p>\n<p>As paramedics lifted him onto a stretcher, Daniel stood absolutely still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father said Harlan wasn\u2019t trying to kill Sarah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said Harlan was trying to make everyone believe Leo died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The stretcher disappeared through the doors.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s face had gone gray.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf that\u2019s true, then the false records weren\u2019t created after Sarah\u2019s death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were part of the plan before Leo was even born.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/feeleverystory.online\/?p=13693\">Click here to continue reading: PART 8: Charles Survived Long Enough to Give Daniel One Name, and Leo Discovered Someone Had Been Lying About Sarah\u2019s Final Hour<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The police photographed the package before anyone touched the notebook.
