witness.”

“Yes.”

“Not signature.”

Robert went still.

Samuel stepped forward.

“What?”

Maya pointed.

“The witness must be present and receive notice.”

She smiled.

“I’m present.”

Robert’s face changed.

The document did cabinet.

Robert shouted.

Ruiz’s team breached.

Everything happened at once.

Samuel pulled a gun.

Luke swore.

Maya dropped.

Police shouted.

Samuel aimed toward the fuel control.

A shot.

Not from police.

Robert jerked.

Samuel had shot him.

For one second everyone froze.

Samuel stared at the weapon as though he had not expected himself to use it.

Robert looked down at the blood spreading across his shirt.

“You fool.”

Samuel’s hand shook.

“You were going to kill the child.”

Robert almost smiled.

“You finally found your price.”

Then police hit Samuel from the side.

The gun slid away.

Officers restrained him.

Maya crawled behind the table.

Ruiz reached her.

“Are you conscious.

Barely.

Paramedics moved in after the scene was secured.

His dissolution device lay beneath the cabinet.

Unactivated.

Halcyon remained in clean-title restoration.

Samuel was handcuffed.

He looked older immediately.

Not powerful.

Not mysterious.

A man who had built his authority from secrets and just run out of them.

Luke and I reached the hangar only after Ruiz cleared it.

Maya saw me.

“Where’s Clara?”

“Hospital.”

“The baby?”

“Safe.”

Her knees nearly gave out.

That was when the fear finally reached her.

I caught her.

She gripped my jacket.

“Do not tell Clara I almost signed.”

“She watched the whole thing.”

“Oh.”

“Also she heard the accountant comment.”

Maya groaned.

“Great.”

Then she started crying.

I held her until Ruiz took her toward the ambulance.

Luke remained near the doorway.

Samuel saw him.

“Lucas.”

Luke stopped.

“Luke.”

Samuel smiled faintly.

“You think they’re your family now?”

Luke looked at me.

Then at Maya.

At Thomas arriving under federal escort because investigators had permitted him to identify Robert.

At Clara on the secure screen.

“I think I get to decide that.”

Samuel’s smile disappeared.

That might have been the first thing anyone had ever taken from him that mattered.

Choice.

Thomas approached Luke.

Stopped several feet away.

No hug.

No demand.

No apology forced into the moment.

“Hello, Luke.”

Luke looked at him.

“You look old.”

Thomas laughed through tears.

“You don’t.”

“I’m thirty-eight.”

“That is not old.”

“Depends who you ask.”

Silence.

Thomas said, “I didn’t know.”

Luke looked toward Samuel.

“I believe that me.

“Liam Mercer.”

I walked closer despite Ruiz’s objection.

Robert’s breathing was shallow.

“You look like Elaine.”

“So does Luke.”

His eyes moved.

He saw my brother.

For the first time, fear crossed his face.

Luke approached.

Robert whispered, “You survived.”

Luke’s expression hardened.

“You knew.”

“No.”

That surprised everyone.

“You ordered me taken.”

“Yes.”

“But you thought I died later?”

Robert coughed.

Blood touched his lip.

“Samuel told me.”

Samuel anywhere.

Only leverage.

Robert laughed weakly.

“The boy learned.”

Samuel said nothing.

I asked the question that still mattered.

“Why my son?”

Robert looked toward me.

“Because Thomas made him the lock.”

“He is not a lock.”

“To Halcyon, he is.”

“He’s a baby.”

Robert’s eyes narrowed.

“That distinction is why you will never build what I whatever money survived, whatever name remained, I knew that much.

I did not want to build Robert’s kind of permanence.

Robert was loaded into the ambulance.

Samuel went into federal custody.

Maya returned to Clara.

Luke surrendered the physical ledgers to investigators.

Northbridge was frozen before midnight.

Southshore Clara said, “He needs a name.”

I looked at her.

“Not Thomas.”

“Obviously.”

“Not Lucas.”

She considered.

“Luke might object.”

“Also our child deserves his own name.”

“Yes.”

We had spent days surrounded by inherited
