Daniel called Maya.<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>Then Clara called.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClara?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her breathing was uneven.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaya was on the phone from her house. She went downstairs because she heard glass break.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is she now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re still at the hospital?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSecurity is coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Voices sounded behind her.<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes for half a second.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not leave the room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about Maya?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe may be hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My own voice sounded strange.<\/p>\n<p>Too calm.<\/p>\n<p>That was what fear did to me when it became too large.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel touched my arm and pointed at his screen.<\/p>\n<p>Maya\u2019s phone had pinged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer location is moving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAway from her house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I told Clara.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d she said. \u201cShe wouldn\u2019t leave without telling me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unless she had no choice.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel arranged a car to Midway.<\/p>\n<p>Julian followed us into the elevator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are not coming,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, I am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiam\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou forged the message that ended my marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou blocked Clara from reaching me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd now her sister may have been taken because of evidence connected to the same operation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen explain why I should let you anywhere near them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at the elevator floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause whoever is doing this knows my family better than yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel made a dismissive sound.<\/p>\n<p>Julian turned on him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou disappeared for fifteen years. You don\u2019t know anything about us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, you know Mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you don\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone used Peregrine today. Someone knew Martin\u2019s credentials. Someone knew where Clara was, when her son would be delivered, and where Maya lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat information did not come only from Mercer Holdings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He was right.<\/p>\n<p>I hated that he was right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome,\u201d I said. \u201cYou stay where I can see you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At Midway, the plane was ready.<\/p>\n<p>The investor\u2019s pilot took off eleven minutes after we arrived.<\/p>\n<p>I sat with my phone open, watching a map Daniel had built from Maya\u2019s last location signal.<\/p>\n<p>The phone moved south, then east.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParking lot near Interstate 40.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould she have dumped it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr whoever took her did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clara texted.<\/p>\n<p>Police were at Maya\u2019s house.<\/p>\n<p>Broken rear window.<\/p>\n<p>Signs of a search.<\/p>\n<p>Blood on the kitchen floor.<\/p>\n<p>No Maya.<\/p>\n<p>I called her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo they think the blood is hers?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice shook.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to say something reassuring.<\/p>\n<p>There was nothing honest enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s the ledger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaya brought it to the hospital before she went home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Then why break into the house?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey didn\u2019t know she had moved it,\u201d Clara said.<\/p>\n<p>That meant whoever went there had stale information.<\/p>\n<p>A small advantage.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the first one we had.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Maya tell anyone she brought it to you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cText?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. She just came.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clara whispered, \u201cLiam, if they took her because of me\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey took her because of what they\u2019re afraid she knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe doesn\u2019t know anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen that helps her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was weak logic.<\/p>\n<p>We both knew it.<\/p>\n<p>I heard our son\u2019s monitor faintly through the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Two people I loved were in danger in the same city, one of them fighting to breathe and the other missing.<\/p>\n<p>My entire life had narrowed to a place I could not reach fast enough.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel was studying photographs from the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething\u2019s wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe appointment list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He enlarged it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese entries were added recently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow recently?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDifferent ink. Different pressure. Could be weeks, maybe days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian leaned over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you compare it to Martin\u2019s writing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t his.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn had remained in Chicago under supervision from company counsel, but Daniel had photographed samples of her handwriting before we left.<\/p>\n<p>Not hers either.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho had the ledger after Martin died?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnna Keene,\u201d Daniel said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if Martin never mailed it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnna said he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said he told her he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He understood.<\/p>\n<p>Someone else could have mailed the box later.<\/p>\n<p>Someone who had added Clara\u2019s medical appointments first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy send surveillance records to the person being surveilled?\u201d Julian asked.<\/p>\n<p>That was the right question.<\/p>\n<p>I stared out the plane window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo scare her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen they would have made sure she opened it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo warn her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr to make sure the ledger surfaced now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSouthshore signing day,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>The box arrived months earlier.<\/p>\n<p>But Clara only opened it on the morning the deal was supposed to close.<\/p>\n<p>Coincidence was possible.<\/p>\n<p>After the last twenty-four hours, I had stopped trusting it.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel pulled up Martin\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin resigned eleven months ago. Died eight months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did the package arrive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I called Clara.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaya says four months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel sat back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Martin did not mail it before his death unless the package sat somewhere for four months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was the postmark?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clara examined the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCharlotte. Four months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian whispered, \u201cSomeone mailed it after he died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho had his ledger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis widow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody said Anna\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>We did not have to.<\/p>\n<p>I called her.<\/p>\n<p>Straight to voicemail.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Straight to voicemail.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel searched public property databases and found her Scottsdale address.<\/p>\n<p>Then another record.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe sold the house six months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did she move?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo forwarding record.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo the frightened widow may not be a frightened widow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew Evelyn\u2019s name,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe also knew exactly what would make us suspicious of Evelyn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was true.<\/p>\n<p>Every new clue seemed designed to sharpen one accusation while hiding another possibility.<\/p>\n<p>I thought back to Anna\u2019s words.<\/p>\n<p>Martin trusted you.<\/p>\n<p>She had known Daniel\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>Had known his connection to Martin.<\/p>\n<p>Had known about the red ledger.<\/p>\n<p>Too much knowledge for someone who claimed to avoid the company.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked physically ill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believed her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause she said your father kept the same kind of ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew what would hook you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression darkened.<\/p>\n<p>We had all been manipulated through the thing we most wanted to believe.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted proof Clara had tried to reach me.<\/p>\n<p>Julian wanted proof his worst actions were instructions, not choices.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel wanted proof his father had fought back.<\/p>\n<p>Someone kept giving each of us just enough.<\/p>\n<p>The pilot announced our descent.<\/p>\n<p>Clara called again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice found Maya\u2019s car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOutside an abandoned medical office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs she there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re searching now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The address was less than twenty minutes from the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay with security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiam\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou cannot order me around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen consider it begging.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>That reached her differently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll stay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When we landed, police met us on the tarmac.<\/p>\n<p>I had expected questions.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, a detective named Ruiz told me Maya had been found alive.<\/p>\n<p>My knees nearly gave way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInside the building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs she hurt?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConcussion. Cut on her arm. She\u2019s conscious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she see who took her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe remembers one person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz looked down at his notes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin Keene.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>I laughed because the alternative was shouting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detective looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is what we are trying to clarify.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the hospital, Clara was not in her original room.<\/p>\n<p>My heart stopped until a nurse explained security had moved her to a restricted floor near the NICU.<\/p>\n<p>I found her sitting upright, pale and furious, the red ledger on a chair beside her.<\/p>\n<p>She stood when I entered.<\/p>\n<p>For half a second, we did not know what to do.<\/p>\n<p>Then she crossed the room and wrapped both arms around me.<\/p>\n<p>I held her carefully because she was still recovering from surgery.<\/p>\n<p>Neither of us spoke.<\/p>\n<p>The last time I had held her, we were married and angry.<\/p>\n<p>Now we were divorced, exhausted, terrified, and connected by a child sleeping down the hall.<\/p>\n<p>She pulled back first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaya is downstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey won\u2019t let me see her yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel and Julian entered.<\/p>\n<p>Clara\u2019s body stiffened when she saw Julian.<\/p>\n<p>He stopped immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at him for a long moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop saying that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He lowered his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen I don\u2019t know what to say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was the coldest thing I had ever heard Clara say.<\/p>\n<p>He accepted it.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Ruiz entered with Maya\u2019s statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe says the man who grabbed her knew where she kept the spare key, knew the layout of her house, and called her by name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she know him personally?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen how did she identify Martin?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe showed her identification.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOld company badge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat could be fake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe also heard the other person call him Martin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOther person?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were two.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDescription?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaya only saw one clearly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz handed us a sketch generated from her description.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at it.<\/p>\n<p>Then handed it to Julian.<\/p>\n<p>Julian sat down.<\/p>\n<p>The man resembled Martin Keene enough to explain Maya\u2019s identification.<\/p>\n<p>But he was younger.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe by fifteen years.<\/p>\n<p>Clara looked at the face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn answered from the doorway.<\/p>\n<p>None of us had heard her arrive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat,\u201d she said, \u201cis Martin Keene\u2019s son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had a son?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAndrew Keene.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never mentioned him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was never a reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn stepped inside under escort from one of our attorneys.<\/p>\n<p>I pointed at the sketch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does Andrew have to do with Mercer Holdings?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her answer changed everything again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe worked for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I searched my memory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot under that name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn looked toward the NICU corridor.<\/p>\n<p>Then at Clara.<\/p>\n<p>Then me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdrian Cole.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knew it instantly.<\/p>\n<p>Our former network security architect.<\/p>\n<p>The man who had designed the authentication system Daniel later discovered was compromised.<\/p>\n<p>He had left Mercer Holdings eighteen months ago.<\/p>\n<p>Three weeks before the boardroom surveillance device appeared.<\/p>\n<p>And six weeks before Clara first noticed the Southshore invoices.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel whispered, \u201cHe built the doors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd after
