One says: escalation beyond mandate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat date?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She told him.<\/p>\n<p>It was three weeks before someone planted the listening device in the boardroom.<\/p>\n<p>Another note followed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnapproved surveillance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRisk of physical coercion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My eyes went to Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhysical?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never authorized violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou keep saying what you didn\u2019t authorize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause somebody expanded this operation beyond its original purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have been trying to determine that for over a year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs that why you kept the archive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer was immediate.<\/p>\n<p>For once, no calculation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI created copies because transactions were appearing that I had not approved. Communications were being altered outside our system.
