All of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pressed the elevator button.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf anything strange happens, leave the building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you expecting?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish I knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The boardroom windows overlooked downtown Chicago, where sunlight reflected sharply from steel and glass. Your former wife has just delivered a premature child. This is not the time to make emotional business decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked directly at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis may be the first informed decision I\u2019ve made in months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One investor pushed back from the table. \u201cIf authorization records are questionable, the signing should be postponed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are no irregularities,\u201d Evelyn said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI disagree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian slammed one hand onto the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you have any idea what delaying this costs us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUs?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held his gaze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face flushed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think I stole from you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think someone did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think I destroyed your marriage?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think someone interfered with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His laugh was sharp. \u201cAnd now Clara tells you all this after showing up with your child?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood so quickly my chair rolled backward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not use my son in this conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room froze.<\/p>\n<p>Julian looked away first.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn watched me with unsettling calm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was right about Southshore,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know that,\u201d Julian replied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know my authorization was forged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something flickered over his face.<\/p>\n<p>Fear.<\/p>\n<p>Real fear.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn said his name softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJulian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped immediately.<\/p>\n<p>The tone bothered me.<\/p>\n<p>Not colleague to colleague.<\/p>\n<p>Mother to child.<\/p>\n<p>Command to subordinate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn\u2019s gaze shifted to me. \u201cKnew what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat the approvals weren\u2019t legitimate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBe careful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t accused you of anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her composure made less sense the longer I watched it. If Daniel was right and Evelyn had engineered the entire scheme, why was she not angrier that I had refused to sign?<\/p>\n<p>She looked almost interested.<\/p>\n<p>I took out my phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne final question. Who controls Vance Meridian Trust?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou believe I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even he appeared surprised.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe trust was created by my late husband.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian\u2019s father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho inherited control?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe beneficiaries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJulian?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes moved.<\/p>\n<p>Just once.<\/p>\n<p>Enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know Daniel is involved,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>She said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho else controls it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then she looked at Julian.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time all morning, I saw panic on his face.<\/p>\n<p>Not fear of me.<\/p>\n<p>Fear of what she might reveal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelyn,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She smiled.<\/p>\n<p>The boardroom doors opened.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Cross walked in carrying a laptop bag.<\/p>\n<p>Julian came to his feet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stopped beside the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello, brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One attorney reached for his phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSecurity\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel walked closer.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn regarded him without surprise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou always did like dramatic entrances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you always preferred rooms where everyone else had less information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian stared at him. \u201cYou\u2019ve been feeding Liam all of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re out of your mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel set a flash drive on the conference table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m tired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked first at Julian, then at Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCleaning up after this family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn\u2019s eyes hardened.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel turned to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe master archive is on this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou decrypted it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOriginal communications. Approval histories. Financial routing. Voice records. Deleted messages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough to prove the transfers were manipulated?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConvenient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also recovered the instruction sent to Rachel ordering her to block Clara Hayes from contacting Liam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat proves nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt proves you lied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was following instructions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>Julian seemed to hear his own words a second after everyone else did.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose instructions?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>She did not help him.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel spoke quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSay it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian\u2019s expression twisted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve always thought you were better than me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel frowned. \u201cThis has nothing to do with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has everything to do with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn\u2019s voice cut across the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian laughed without humor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Mother. Why stop now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel was always the good son. The brilliant one. The principled one. The one who refused her money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed at himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was the one who stayed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt the conversation moving somewhere uglier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou blocked Clara because Evelyn told you to?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said Clara was threatening Southshore. She said you needed distance from her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou forged the attorney email.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word hit me harder than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>There had still been a small part of me hoping some technical explanation would make the page real.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou put that email in my hand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me not to call my wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou watched me file for divorce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t think you\u2019d do it that fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re blaming me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said I should respect her request for no contact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was no request.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hands wanted to become fists.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, I thought of Clara\u2019s face when she said she had tried to tell me.<\/p>\n<p>I thought of the child under NICU lights.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened after the divorce papers?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClara kept looking into Southshore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you kept intercepting her messages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe approvals carrying my signature?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He glanced toward Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose were not mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can believe I stole from Liam if you want. I did things I\u2019m ashamed of.
