Thomas.

“Because of him.”

Thomas’s jaw tightened.

Not anger.

Pain.

Catherine explained.

Thomas was born to Evelyn Price.

Margaret.

That part of the birth record was true.

Richard Vale was not his father.

Jonathan Mercer was.

Jonathan had been much older than Evelyn.

He met her while working around Harbor Ridge financing.

Their relationship was not one Catherine described gently.

Evelyn was young.

Jonathan was married.

Powerful.

Violent when challenged.

Thomas was the result.

Jonathan refused to acknowledge him.

But he also refused to allow Evelyn to raise a Mercer child outside Mercer control.

Thomas was placed at Harbor Ridge under a false surname.

Jonathan financed it.

The J.M. sponsor entry belonged to him.

George asked why Richard Vale’s name had been substituted later.

Catherine answered.

“Because Jonathan found him.”

Thomas looked away.

After Thomas’s first escape, Jonathan came to Harbor Ridge demanding the boy be returned.

Evelyn panicked.

Richard intervened.

He claimed Thomas as his own son on altered paperwork.

That made Thomas legally more difficult for Jonathan to seize without exposing the entire identity scheme.

Richard’s false paternity had been a shield.

Not an inheritance trick.

Thomas laughed bitterly.

“A shield that lasted until he decided Anna mattered more.”

Catherine closed her eyes.

“Anna was a child.”

“So was I.”

“Yes.”

The two words landed harder than any defense.

George asked about Anna.

Catherine looked at him.

“Anna was mine.”

That we knew.

“Richard was her father?”

Catherine hesitated.

Then nodded.

“Yes.”

Thomas looked at her sharply.

“You still say it that way.”

Catherine ignored him.

Her relationship with Richard began after he helped protect Thomas.

Years later, Anna was born.

Jonathan learned about her.

He immediately understood what she represented.

A Vale child.

A Mercer child.

An heir connected to both family structures.

A potential lever.

So Anna was hidden.

Her age altered.

Her birth shifted on paper.

She moved in and out of Harbor Ridge under different labels because Richard believed no one would look for his daughter inside a system already overflowing with false identities.

George asked, “Why did you take Thomas that night?”

“Because Jonathan was coming.”

Edwin remembered now.

Catherine had arrived terrified.

She found Thomas.

She found Edwin.

She told Edwin to get Thomas outside.

Edwin gave Thomas his coat.

Catherine drove away with him.

But they did not get far.

Jonathan’s men found them at the Price family farm.

Richard intervened.

A confrontation followed.

Evelyn agreed to let Richard take control of Thomas’s paperwork.

Jonathan backed off temporarily.

Catherine was declared dead on paper.

That allowed Richard to move her without Mercer interference.

George asked, “And Edwin?”

Catherine looked at him with visible shame.

“We left him.”

Edwin said nothing.

Catherine continued.

Richard believed removing Edwin too would expose the escape.

So Edwin was returned to Harbor Ridge.

Sedated.

His memory blurred.

The medical record fabricated.

Thomas spoke quietly.

“I begged them to take you.”

Edwin looked at him.

“I thought you forgot me.”

“No.”

“Then why did you spend years believing I betrayed you?”

Thomas’s face hardened.

“Because Catherine told me you chose to stay.”

Catherine inhaled sharply.

Edwin stared at her.

“You told him what?”

Catherine stood.

“I was trying to keep him from going them.

“Don’t.”

But the damage had already surfaced.

For decades, Thomas believed Edwin voluntarily remained behind while Thomas was hunted.

Edwin believed Thomas had disappeared without looking back.

A single lie had split them.

George asked Catherine why she was helping Thomas now.

She looked toward the dark rear of the warehouse.

“Because Richard finally told him the rest.”

“The rest of what?”

Thomas answered.

“That Jonathan Mercer didn’t die.”

Edwin’s face went blank.

Daniel’s voice crackled through George’s concealed receiver from the monitoring team.

He had heard.

Sloan immediately signaled for a records search.

Thomas continued.

Jonathan had survived into old age under another identity.

Richard had known where.

Catherine had known too.

They kept Thomas away because they feared what would happen if he found his father.

Thomas eventually discovered the truth himself.

He confronted Jonathan.

Not decades ago.

Six years ago.

The same year Richard recorded the message Anna later stored.

George asked what happened.

Thomas said, “Jonathan admitted everything.”

“Then where is he?”

Thomas looked at Catherine.

Catherine’s expression tightened.

“Dead.”

“Did you kill confronted him.

Jonathan remained unrepentant.

He described Evelyn as foolish.

Thomas as a mistake.

Catherine as weak.

Anna as useful.

He also admitted he had ordered children moved through Harbor Ridge for financial reasons.

Not only Thomas.

Dozens.

Catherine had carried a gun.

She shot him
