He simply told him someone had approached the house and left evidence connected to Harbor Ridge.<\/p>\n<p>Sloan told us not to touch anything else.<\/p>\n<p>While we waited, Clara returned to Margaret\u2019s letter.<\/p>\n<p>The references to Anna and Thomas were carefully phrased, almost deliberately incomplete.<\/p>\n<p>Then George noticed something.<\/p>\n<p>The first letter of every fourth line spelled a name.<\/p>\n<p>MARIAN.<\/p>\n<p>Clara sat back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew Margaret Holt,\u201d she said slowly. \u201cBut Marian Holt\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlias?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe the other way around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sloan arrived twenty minutes later with another investigator. They photographed the porch, collected the image, checked the yard, and found a partial shoe impression in wet soil beside the hedge.<\/p>\n<p>No vehicle had been seen.<\/p>\n<p>No neighbor had noticed anyone.<\/p>\n<p>Sloan listened while Clara explained Daniel\u2019s Harbor Ridge release.<\/p>\n<p>He did not react until she mentioned Thomas Allen.<\/p>\n<p>Then he asked, \u201cThomas had the crescent mark?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clara nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Sloan rubbed his jaw.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found that symbol in Mercer\u2019s seized material.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse jumped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeside names.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sloan hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than three.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The crooked moon was not merely a family identifier.<\/p>\n<p>It had become a classification.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had been marking people connected to Harbor Ridge, perhaps children whose identities had been altered or whose parentage could create problems.<\/p>\n<p>Anna was among them.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret\u2019s letter offered the first explanation.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas and Anna shared a father.<\/p>\n<p>They were half siblings.<\/p>\n<p>George read that sentence aloud, then stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was their father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letter did not say.<\/p>\n<p>Clara believed the omission intentional.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret feared correspondence being intercepted. She had therefore written around names, assuming George\u2019s father already knew them.<\/p>\n<p>Sloan asked whether any other Holt material remained.<\/p>\n<p>George remembered an old address book upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, beside Margaret Holt, someone had written:<\/p>\n<p>M.H. \u2014 sister knows.<\/p>\n<p>There was no sister listed.<\/p>\n<p>But tucked into the back cover was a telephone number.<\/p>\n<p>Disconnected.<\/p>\n<p>Sloan had the number checked anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Its historical subscriber was Helen Reed.<\/p>\n<p>That surname brought Clara to her feet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She searched her papers so quickly that several fell to the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Then she found a Harbor Ridge staff list.<\/p>\n<p>Elias Reed.<\/p>\n<p>Night maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>Employed during the same months as the missing release page.<\/p>\n<p>Helen Reed could have been his wife.<\/p>\n<p>Or daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Or sister.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation shifted in minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Sloan traced Helen Reed through old property records while Clara compared names.<\/p>\n<p>Helen had once lived three towns away.<\/p>\n<p>She later changed her name.<\/p>\n<p>To Marian Holt.<\/p>\n<p>George stared at Margaret\u2019s letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Marian wasn\u2019t a code.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Clara said. \u201cShe was a person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A living person, according to Sloan\u2019s preliminary search.<\/p>\n<p>Eighty-two years old.<\/p>\n<p>Resident of a private assisted-living community less than two hours away.<\/p>\n<p>George wanted to leave immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Sloan stopped him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou received a photograph taken through your window tonight. Nobody goes anywhere without us knowing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clara agreed.<\/p>\n<p>I did too.<\/p>\n<p>George hated it, but eventually nodded.<\/p>\n<p>We spent the next hour reconstructing the likely relationship.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret Holt had not been Marian\u2019s sister by blood. The Holt surname appeared only after Marian stopped using Reed.<\/p>\n<p>Elias Reed had worked at Harbor Ridge.<\/p>\n<p>Marian was his daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret had apparently helped Marian disappear after Harbor Ridge closed.<\/p>\n<p>Why remained unclear.<\/p>\n<p>Near midnight, Sloan received another call.<\/p>\n<p>The fingerprint unit had found a usable partial print on the back of the photograph left at George\u2019s door.<\/p>\n<p>It belonged to a woman.<\/p>\n<p>Not Clara.<\/p>\n<p>Not anyone in Sloan\u2019s current database of Mercer associates.<\/p>\n<p>But the print had appeared once before.<\/p>\n<p>On a Harbor Ridge document recovered years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>A witness statement signed by Marian Reed.<\/p>\n<p>George looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Marian left that picture tonight, she\u2019s not in assisted living.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sloan\u2019s expression remained guarded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr somebody has access to things she touched.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next morning we drove to the facility under Sloan\u2019s arrangement.<\/p>\n<p>Marian Holt was there.<\/p>\n<p>She was smaller than I expected, with silver hair cut close around her face and clear gray eyes that followed each of us carefully.<\/p>\n<p>Clara introduced herself.<\/p>\n<p>Marian interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know who you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then she looked at George.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I know whose son you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>George sat opposite her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you leave a photograph at my house last night?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you write this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He showed her a copy of the message.<\/p>\n<p>Marian stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>Her hand began trembling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you get that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>George explained.<\/p>\n<p>Marian closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>When she opened them, she asked Sloan to shut the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father kept three pages,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne showed who entered Harbor Ridge. One showed who left.
