emotionally.

Biologically.

My parents had married without knowing they shared a father.

I existed because decades of false identities had prevented them from recognizing blood.

Anna approached carefully.

“George.”

I looked at her.

“What am I supposed to do with that?”

“Nothing right now.”

“That is not possible.”

“No. But you do not have to decide what it means today.”

I laughed bitterly.

“It means something whether I decide or not.”

Elizabeth spoke from behind me.

“It means they lied to us.”

I turned.

She had stopped crying.

Her face looked emptied out.

“It does not mean you are wrong for existing.”

I stared at her.

“Mom.”

“I need you to hear that before your mind goes anywhere back.”

My stomach tightened.

“Say it.”

She looked first at Elizabeth.

Then me.

“Daniel Mercer shares a paternal relationship consistent with being Thomas Mercer’s full brother.”

That confirmed Dad’s side.

“And Elizabeth?”

Sloan paused.

“Daniel also shares a paternal pointed to the archival sample record.

“It appears the person buried under Arthur Rowan’s name after Harbor Ridge was not genetically related to the Rowan family.”

I her.

“Possibly.”

Elizabeth stared at the photograph.

“If Arthur survived…”

I understood.

“Then Richard Vale may not have been the one who became Arthur Rowan.”

Silence.

The identities shifted again.

Maybe real Arthur had survived and reclaimed his own name.

Maybe Richard had taken
