Give them this address.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elizabeth shook her head urgently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo police yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Mercer has one officer with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pointed toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>A man crossed through the porch light.<\/p>\n<p>Uniform.<\/p>\n<p>Sheriff\u2019s department.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>Another figure followed.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>He stopped at the porch steps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElizabeth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer called again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know George is with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She whispered, \u201cHe followed Jonas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A third figure appeared.<\/p>\n<p>The man from my house.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer spoke through the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have something that belongs to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elizabeth looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I whispered, \u201cThe records?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer called from outside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGeorge deserves to know why Richard protected you all those years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>Fear, but not of him entering.<\/p>\n<p>Fear of what he might say.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does he mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer\u2019s voice came again through the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk her who gave Richard the first set of account numbers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at Elizabeth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is he talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked away.<\/p>\n<p>The silence answered before she did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI made a mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat mistake?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought I was exposing corruption.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>Elizabeth forced herself to continue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe accounts Richard first used were not discovered by him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Outside, Mercer laughed softly.<\/p>\n<p>She whispered the rest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI gave them to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The entire history shifted again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou helped Dad take the money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first, I believed the money had been stolen from my family by my own father.
